Posted Jun 2/10 - How Fleeting is the Undefeated Season...Richmond RiverRats 5 - Portland Rockets 2
Good Morning Baseball fans. It's a beautiful day in Portland. The RiverRats are a wood bat team comprised of college players from all over the nation. The players live with hose families and their summer job is baseball...and they are good at their job. They are very much like our Celina neighbors, the Grand Lake Mariners, who we will play this Sunday, June 5. Richmond pitchers from Akron, Purdue, St. Joe, and Earlham, limited the Rockets to 5 hits, and jumped to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. By the ninth, the Rockets were down 5-0 but with an good ol' fashioned Rockets' rally, we loaded the bases with no one out and scored 2 runs. Dan Bollenbacher was the starter and went 5 solid innings, striking out 3 and walking 1. Will Walters of Huntington and Bryce Cook finished the game in a solid manner (Cook had 2 scoreless frames). The Rockets threatened in the 1st inning when Michael Ingram's long drive to right field bounced off the fence for a double, just inches away from clearing the fence for a home run. However, second base was not touched again until the 9th inning, as the offense went down 1-2-3 five times in the game. In the 9th, Derek Mounsey reached on a third sackers error, walk to Mark Isenberg, single up the middle by Riley Muhlenkamp, and the bases were loaded with the tying run on deck. Justin Branock bounced into a double-play but the throw to first was high and 2 runs scored. It was 5-2, had a pop out ground out and lights out! Game time for nine-inning game was 2 hours 19 min. The major league game average is 2 hrs and 36 min.  As we talked after the game, we are about the competition. It will make us tougher down the road. We are developing a pitching staff. You should have heard the fans when we brought in Bryce Cook to pitch and John Clawson to catch (Delaware County connection). Bryce struck out the first 2 batters he faced and retired 6 of 7 batters.  We had more players, more fans, just not more runs!!! Rockets return to action tonight at 7 pm at McBride Stadium. Billy Geeslin will be on the hill. We won't win them all, just the next one!!!  This is Randy Miller  pg 14
