Countdown to 2011 State Cup Championships
(May 28/11)

Welcome to the home page of Boerne Blaze soccer, reigning champions of Texas Western District Division One Association (WDDOA). The Blaze won WDDOA Division One in Fall 2010 with an overall record of 8-1-1 and a goal differential of 22-4. This was on the heels of the WDDOA National Cup Championship in Spring 2010, finishing with a record of 5-2-0 and outscoring opponents 18-8.

The Boerne Blaze also won the prestigious SportSource College Showcase in Plano in December 2010 in dominating fashion, winning all three matches with a 13-1 cumulative goal differential. In between claiming championships, the Blaze managed to squeeze in five friendly matches against local university teams during Fall 2010, posting a remarkable 3-1-1 record against the colleges, scoring 17 goals.

Unlike some clubs, in Boerne we support and encourage our players to compete in high school soccer as well. Blaze players formed the majority of the 2011 Texas HS State Champion Boerne Champion Chargers, including 8 of 11 starters. During the past couple years, many current Blaze players also have been recognized for their contributions on the high school pitch:

This webpage contains a great deal of information about the Boerne Blaze, past and present, and more will be added regularly. Please use the navigational buttons on the left to check on current and historical rosters, standings, schedules, scores and statistics. The calendar is updated regularly, and the fields section includes maps to locations we play. Also, many photos already have been posted, with many more photos and videos to be added soon.

Whether you have been with the Blaze family for many years, have found us only recently, or are just an interested soccer fan, please take a tour around the site. Fourteen seasons worth of information and media can be found inside. Do you remember what some of these young men looked like when they were in elementary school? We do.

The Boerne Blaze is a true small-club, small-town soccer success story. Formed in 2004 with primarily a core of Boerne Soccer Club recreational players and struggling even in Division II that first season, steady progress over the next few seasons included a playoff berth in 2005.

However, the turning point came in Spring 2006 when Matt Peterson, then a recent graduate of UIW and its outstanding soccer program, was hired as the Trainer of the Blaze. Peterson immediately instilled enhanced discipline, work ethic and individual responsibility, and the players took to it with great enthusiasm and success.

As detailed above, we encourage and enable our players to compete in a variety of competitive soccer opportunities. Critical to the success of that approach is the conditioning and fitness discipline taught, and exemplified, by their Trainer, who continues to play soccer competitively and runs marathons in his spare time.

From Spring 2006 through Spring 2009, the Blaze never played in the same division of soccer twice, consistently winning and qualifying to move up a division each season. From South Texas Cup in spring 2006 and Division 2 in fall 2006 to Directors Cup and Super II in 2007 to Presidents Cup and Division 1 in 2008, and finally to National Cup in spring 2009, it has been a remarkable run.

The Blaze have competed in numerous college showcases over the past few seasons, including three times in the Plano SportSource Showcase and twice in the Austin Lonestar Showcase. That may be part of the reason that the majority of Blaze players already have committed to continue playing soccer at the university level, with a few still choosing between their college options as of this update.

I have been on the coaching staff of the Blaze since its inception in 2004, and Tammy Edmiston has been the team Manager since day one as well. As mentioned, Matt Peterson has been the Trainer since 2006. When Marty Javors' son Evan graduated in 2010 and took his soccer skills to Southwestern University, he retired as our Assistant Coach, and Gabe Fuentes officially moved into that role. However, Gabe has been involved with the Blaze in a variety of roles since 2004, and has played a fundamental role in building the team into what we see today.

Sometimes when watching the 2011 Boerne Blaze compete with such tremendous success against the best players in the state of Texas I think back to when the team consisted of a bunch of 11-year old boys. Those same elementary school kids now are preparing to graduate from high school and deciding which university colors they will wear for the next four years. It has been an amazing and rewarding experience, and we are so blessed to have been along for the ride.
