Opening Day Notes
*Still building his arm up since basketball season concluded, sophomore, Parker Henry battled during his first career Varsity start, surrendering only one earned run over his three innings of work. When it appeared he may be laboring, Henry made quality pitches.
*Senior, Devin Riddle, who did not become a pitcher until the fall of his junior season, gave us two quality innings of relief out of the Bulldog pen.
*Caleb Oaks, who is still becoming comfortable on the mound held the lead as we went into the 7th, in addition to his sacrifice fly to right field in the 2nd inning. Still getting into baseball form, Oaks is going to have a big season for the Bulldogs.
*Juniors, Elijah Smith and Hunter Haynes both hit the ball well for Hampton on Monday evening, showing big strides from their sophomore campaigns.
*Sophomore, Josh Owens had a good offensive rookie season in 2018, but the ability to drive the ball he demonstrated in the preseason was evident on Opening Day, as Owens hit two 2B and hit a deep fly ball to the South Greene right fielder.
*The Street twins had quality at-bats at the top of the order and both played good defense at their respective positions.
*Freshman, Caleb Royston played a solid game at shortstop, which is a great sign for us, as he is only going to improve.
*Freshman, Morgan Lyons showed the athletic ability he demonstrated during football and basketball season, receiving and blocking at the dish.
We did so many things well, including running the bases, receiving and giving signs, and executing the short game. We hate we couldn't hold on to win, but we have much to feel good about from Opening Day.
