Pitching and Offense Make Quick Work of Longhorns

Posted June 3, 2019

The Wolfpack breezed through their first game of a two game set with the Longhorns on Sunday afternoon, winning by a score of 10-0 to improve to 5-0 in league play, 8-0 overall.

Curtis Smith (3-0) took the mound for his second FMBA start of the season and held the Longhorn bats in check most of the game. He spun a complete game shutout and struck out twelve while allowing only one walk and three hits, two of which came in the bottom of the seventh as he began to tire. He lowered his overall season ERA to 0.69 with the outing (1.05 in FMBA play).

Trent Lawson's breakout season continued as he led the Wolfpack offense by going three for four at the plate while playing through an injured shoulder to fill a hole at shortstop for his teammates. He drove in four of the Wolfpack's ten runs in the game and leads the team in RBI with eight through only two games played. He will take an absurd .778 batting average into game two of the doubleheader.

Axel Christoffersen and Roly Diaz both chipped in multiple hits of their own, and Christoffersen did his best to keep pace with Lawson's four RBI as he finished the game with three of his own following a bases loaded triple in the third inning.

With each subsequent game the Wolfpack are proving to the rest of the league that they have the deepest and most dangerous offensive lineup. However the defense continues to be a struggle, the Pack committed three more errors in this game and have yet to finish a regular season game with two errors or less. They now lead the FMBA in errors and have played the second fewest games.

Player of the week (Jul 19/20)

Russell Strilchuk

Wolfpack Rookie of the Year candidate Russell Strilchuk has broken out over the past week with two home runs, one of the walk off variety, in the Wolfpack's series against the White Sox. He led the team with six RBI this week and was just shy of batting .500 going 5-11 at the dish.
