Defense Shines As Wolfpack Hand Diamondbacks First Loss

Posted June 11, 2019

The Wolfpack improved to 7-3 on the season with a 6-0 shutout of the first place Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Pack was able to rise to the occasion after a defensively sloppy doubleheader loss to the Dinos on the weekend and put together a flawless defensive performance against one of the best teams in the league. This marks the first game in 2019 in which they've recorded no errors.

Curtis Smith (3-0) spun seven innings in a complete game shutout of the second highest scoring team in the league. He struck out eleven batters while scattering four hits and walking two. This was his second consecutive complete game shutout and he grew his league leading strikeout total to thirty-nine through twenty and one third innings pitched.

Most of the offensive highlights took place in the first or second inning in this game, as Michael Goldade singled to get on base in front of the scorching hot Trent Lawson, who deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a two-run shot, his second of the season. That would ultimately be all the Pack needed to win the game, but Ray Tamayo felt he had to keep pace with Lawson, and followed suit by launching his own two-run shot to left field on a first pitch fastball. Both players are now tied for the team lead in home runs with two each. After a Lawson sacrifice fly, the two players would combine to knock in five of the Pack's six runs in the contest.

The Wolfpack have a small break before there next series at 3pm and 6pm against the Twins on June 16th.
