Young Stars Shine In Game 2 Blowout

Posted June 17, 2019

Game 2 was a far less interesting affair as the Wolfpack offense was firing on all cylinders in this one. The Pack scored in every inning on their way to a 13-3 final in a six inning mercy rule game.

Pat Kelley (1-0) returned from a three week hiatus (nursing a minor back injury) to act as the opener for Game 2 against the Twins and spun a stellar two innings before handing things off to Dirk Dembroski (1-0) who took things the rest of the way to earn his first FMBA win of the 2019 season. Neither pitcher allowed a walk, and they stifled the Twins offense to the tune of only two earned runs over six innings while the Wolfpack offense did their thing.

Game 2 was the tale of two rookies, as twenty year-old Trent Lawson and nineteen year-old Brandon Billesberger put on an offensive show throughout the entire game. Lawson, an early favoite for the Wolfpack's 2019 MVP award, continued his torrid 2019 season by going three for four and finishing a single shy of the cycle. He drove in three runs and scored three himself. His video game numbers persist, as he's now hitting .727/.720/1.455 in FMBA play. Branon Billesberger broke out in a big way as well in this game, falling only a double and a single shy of the cycle himself. The speedy young outfielder has three triples of his own this year which is good for second on the team, and popped his first career FMBA homer in this one, only his tenth career game.

The Wolfpack are gradually getting some of their key payers back from early season injuries, but the offense has continued to roll in their absence as the young additions to the roster have begun to cement themselves into various roles as well. The future looks brighter and brightrer for the Calgary Wolfpack as their core continues to add fresh, talented role players that have arrived ready to tear the FMBA up from Day 1.

Player of the week (Jul 19/20)

Russell Strilchuk

Wolfpack Rookie of the Year candidate Russell Strilchuk has broken out over the past week with two home runs, one of the walk off variety, in the Wolfpack's series against the White Sox. He led the team with six RBI this week and was just shy of batting .500 going 5-11 at the dish.
