Wolfpack Rookie Of The Year Candidate Pads Resume With Derby Win

As soon as Cam Williams stepped onto the field in 2019 he added a lethal righ-handed bat to the middle of what was already a long and potent lineup. He also provided strong defense at the hot corner and quality innings on the mound, but now Williams has added an FMBA Home Run Derby title to his resume in his maiden voyage through the FMBA.

Saturday afternoon's annual Home Run Derby saw another strong turnout from teams and players around the lague as representatives from all but three teams came out to try their hand at claiming the title of the league's most prolific power bat.

The initial field of twenty contestants waned to four heading into the semifinal round, and each semifinal matchup had Wolfpack representation as Blake Carruthers came out from the labrum surgery waiting list to defend his 2018 title, but ultimately fell 8-7 to Adrian Malana of the Calgary Guns in their semifinal matchup. Cam Williams put out a derby-high nine homers in his semifinal round to knock out Calgary Dukes slugger Eric Buckley and set himself on a collision course with Adrian Malana for what turned out to the best Home Run Derby final in recent memory.

Both finalists crushed eight homers each in their timed round, with Williams smacking his eighth and round-tying homer with eight seconds left on the clock. The tie would force the exhausted hitters into a 5-swing swing off, with Malana hitting first. Adrian was able to put one ball over the left field wall with his five swings, giving Williams five swings to hit two home runs and clinch the title. Williams put a ball out on his second swing to gurantee he would at least survive the round, and then let loose another bomb on his fourth swing to clinch his first career FMBA Derby title.

The Wolfpack would like to extend a huge thanks to all of the friends and family that volunteer and help make this event possible each summer. They'd also like to thank event sponsor Hells' Basement Brewery, and silent auction donors Stampede Toyota, the Calgary Redbirds, Frank Kernick, Verna Goldade, and Glenmore Audi.
