Bulldogs Show Strong in Scrimmage

Last night, we had our first road trip of the season as we travelled to Avery County for a scrimmage. In one night, in a scrimmage in North Carolina, two years of offensive frustrations seemed to be lifted in a 13-1 victory. We started the first inning by loading the bases, striking for two early runs. From there, the offensive onslaught continued, including a double suicide squeeze. There were runners on second and third. Both runners took off on a steal. Dalton Rouse then got a bunt down on the third base line. Their third baseman fielded the bunt and threw the ball to first, so the runner that started on second rounded third and scored, beating the throw from the first baseman.

While the offense was running on all cylinders, the pitching was just as good. Starting the scrimmage for us was junior, Josh Owens. He threw two scoreless innings, working with a solid fastball and a really good curveball. Getting the ball next was freshman left-hander, Brody Hicks. The first-year hurler put up a scoreless frame of his own, being a nice change off of Owens. After Hicks, Dalton Rouse threw an inning of his own. The 2020 debut of the big lefty was very rewarding for the senior, as he battled back from an injury-riddled 2019, and has spent hours and hours refining and reworking his mechanics. Rouse showed signs of his former self, recording three strikeouts in his scoreless inning. Following Rouse was sophomore right-hander, Caleb Royston. Royston labored early in his inning of work, but he finished strong by striking out the last two batters.

Overall, Bulldog Baseball could not be happier with the scrimmage. We will be back in action in a scrimmage at South Greene on Monday.
