My name is Verna Richardson,
I am the owner and visionary of the

Robert Richardson Sr. had fought a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He is my father In-law and was such a wonderful strong willed man.
I love him so much. He has won the battle and is a survivor in heaven. I am willing to continue to fight this battle of cancer with our wellness therapy program.
I have three wishes:
The first is that cancer as a disease will be cured during my lifetime. The second is that it will be prevented. While these may not be possible, my third wish is that all individuals with cancer receive optimal comprehensive medical and psychosocial care that allows them to maximize their health and wellness.
Cancer affects the mind, the body, the soul, and the emotions. We are committed to help the whole person, not just the disease.
A cancer diagnosis should not be faced alone. Everyone needs information, guidance and support during treatment, recovery or recurrence.
The IDA MAE CENTER INC. Cancer Wellness , We respect the mind-body relationship and believe that quality of life is an essential goal.
Robert Richardson Sr., battled Pancreatic Cancer, seeing that his diagnosis provides an opportunity for personal growth, We all can embrace his words of empowerment.

Ida Mae Center offers help to those battling cancer

When Verna Richardsons mother was battling cancer, it was a lonely process filled with uncertainty and fear.
She wanted to make something meaningful come of her mothers death in 1984. Years later, working for the New River fitness center, Richardson started thinking about how she could improve the lives of people touched by cancer with her background in fitness and nutrition.
We watched (our mother) go through her battle with cancer not knowing what to do and how to help her feel better, said Richardson. So I came up with a wellness therapy program so we could help people who were suffering from cancer or survivors just feel better as they are going through their battle or recovery.
Richardson founded the Ida Mae Center, named for her mother, in 2009. The wellness therapy program isnt doctorprescribed medical care that will cure a cancer patient. Instead, its yoga classes, meditation, Zumba and counseling when the individual needs it. Some of the visitors to the Ida Mae Center have never had cancer, but come to get information on preventative measures or to enjoy the exercise and wellness classes. But for the people who do come while in their battle or recovery, the visits are always free.
Bernette Mundy, vice president of the Ida Mae Center and Richardsons sister, said they try to make the atmosphere warm.
We talk to families about what their loved ones are going through and about stuff that they might be afraid to ask their doctor, said Mundy. The center feels more like a clubhouse than a hospital, she said. Richardson said many patients are also afraid people will judge them in a traditional fitness center setting.
They feel like if they go to a regular fitness center, the eyes are on them because either their hair has fallen out or they just look sickly, said Richardson. At the Ida Mae Center, cancer patients can rest assured that everyone their knows about what they are going through and understands.

Wellness Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Program
Eating well is essential for good health and for preventing an array of diseases and conditions including cancer. Food has tremendous healing properties, therefore it is important to understand which foods prevent cancer, disrupts its growth, and stops it from spreading to the rest of the body. At the Ida Mae Center we teach you how to use food and nutrients to prevent diseases like cancer from occurring through Wellness Therapy and Functional Nutrition. If cancer should occur, we use evidence-based protocols to help you during cancer treatment and recovery.
Our protocols use specific food and nutrients that address the following:
- Immune system, detecting and eliminating cancers
- Detoxification pathways, encouraging the elimination of toxins
- Inflammation, a known risk factor for developing cancer
your body, which is why we use wellness therapy, food prescriptions and recipes to help your cells behave in the most beneficial way.
Cancer Prevention
It is much simpler to maintain good health than to restore it. Learn how to do so through diet and lifestyle, we combine Functional Nutrition to assess your disease risk, with “food to create an individualized nutrition plan just for you.
For the Cancer Patient
Cancer treatment often causes nutrition-related side effects including altered taste, poor appetite, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Treatment can also impair your gastrointestinal system, especially the good flora and intestinal lining. Many foods can be used to help minimize side effects while others can actually enhance treatment.
Seasons of Survivorship
At the Ida Mae Center, cancer survivorship is recognized as a distinct phase of cancer care. As a patient moves on after treatment he or she is at risk for other medical complications as well as cancer recurrence. Treatment can also cause depletion of nutrients, and disruption of the digestive and hormone systems. Let us join your medical team—we can guide you back to optimal health through Wellness Therapy Programs.
Cancer Prevention and Exercise |
The American Cancer Society recommends 30 minutes of physical activity most days. Studies have shown that physical activity can help protect against some cancers, either by balancing caloric intake with energy expenditure, or by other means. Studies have shown that being overweight can lead to an increased risk for cancers of the colon, prostate, endometrium, breast, and kidney. For cancer prevention and for overall healthy living it is wise to develop a daily exercise routine. |

February is National Cancer Prevention Month
If your New Year’s fervor to get healthy is already losing steam, February — National Cancer Prevention Month – is a great time to give yourself a second chance.
American Institute for Cancer Research’s (AICR’s) three Guidelines for Cancer Prevention can help you focus on what’s most important.
1. Choose mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat.
2. Be physically active every day in any way for 30 minutes or more.
3. Aim to be a healthy weight throughout life.
Notice anything about them? Like, for example, how closely the advice for cutting cancer risk resembles advice for preventing other chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes – not to mention for getting in shape?
It’s true: these simple steps offer many different health benefits, and National Cancer Prevention Month is as good a time as any to start putting them into action.
Let’s look at them one at a time:
Choose mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat.
You already know that limited high-calorie treats is a good idea. But did you know that if you make an effort to prepare meals focused around vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, you’ll help fortify your body against cancer?
That’s what AICR’s groundbreaking expert report concluded. The report also found a convincing scientific link between red and processed meats and colon cancer, so it’s a good idea to limit red meat to 18 ounces of lean cuts per week and avoid processed meats like ham, hot dogs, sausage and bacon.
Be physically active every day in any way for 30 minutes or more.
Remember: Every day – in any way. That means you don’t need a gym membership – you just need to get your heart pumping.
Being physically active for a total of at least 30 minutes a day — whether you’re walking, vacuuming, dancing or scuba diving – will lower your risk for colon cancer and possibly several other cancers as well.
You might need to get more than 30 minutes a day in order to prevent weight gain – which is very important — but you don’t have to do it all at once. Try breaking your activity into several 15 or 20 minute sessions to fit your schedule.
Aim to be a healthy weight throughout life.
And what about that goal so many of us seek right after the holidays, a healthy weight?
It’s the third key element that will help protect against chronic disease. In fact, carrying excess weight has been linked to six different types of cancer.
The good news is that once you start following the first two guidelines about diet and physical activity, you’ll find it easier to accomplish this one.
So this month especially, keep these three guidelines in mind and remember: It’s never too early and never too late to start making choices that improve your chances for good health (and good looks!) for 2014 and beyond.

New challenges.
Even as more survivors claim victory over their cancers, they face new challenges. The medications, treatments and surgeries used to treat cancer, and the cancer itself, can have lasting side effects on energy, endurance, balance and strength. Some survivors will encounter emotional challenges, including understanding and accepting the changes to their body or life that came with cancer. These physical and emotional side effects can be managed to ensure that you take the next step from survival to the happy, healthy energetic life you deserve.
Managing future risks.
Cancer survivors are also at greater risk for recurrence or developing secondary cancers as a result of several factors, including the effects of treatment, genetics, risk factors, and unhealthy behaviors like smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. You absolutely can reduce your risk of cancer by adopting a healthier lifestyle. And the Ingalls Survivorship program can encourage you to take the next step to protect your future health.
