Rockets sweep ft. wayne red sox 13-0 and 11-1 sun july 10, 2011
Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland. Portland rockets run thru the ft. wayne red sox like a hot knife thru butter ---a DH sweep Sunday at runkle-miller field 13-0 and 11-1. we will try to not make any more reference to the hot weather /
Rockets started off with a 6 run bang in the very first inning, that is all starter eric van matre would need as Portland cruised to the 5 inn mercy rule. Van matre struck out 7 of the 13 batters he faced allowed but 1 hit. Craig martin pitched one scoreless inning. Van matre has a professional ball tryout this week with the gary railcats. Good luck to our veteran lefthander from wapahani. Rockets right fielder ben smith drilled his 6th home run of the season over the right field fence to add to the fireworks. Roundtree, Williams, mccowan and Campbell all had hits.
Thanks for the donation to portland’s team, bob freemeyer . and to portland parks dept for the completion of the new outfield fence----old fence replaced over $8000 1985
After a short break, the lunching pad grilling burgers and serving cold drinks---the rockets went back to work and extended their hot streak. The 11-1 pasting of the red sox in game 2 extends Portland’s win streak to 6 games. Included in that hot stretch-sat. forfeit by the Indiana breakers –their mgr called sat morning and said he could not make a team to Portland----he expressed his apologies to all the players, fans, and city of Portland—he had heard how Portland cares about its baseball, how well attended and how it is an event==== well- thanks for the compliment but the greatest compliment is how our guys show up to hone their craft, honor their commitment, and have each other’s back=we show up –whiting, mich. City, Warsaw, Mishawaka, we respect the game and a may the best team win—we represent Portland we don’t call in sick. League officials share that the breakers although leading the west division will be excluded from post season play.
Anyway rockets take game 2 11-1, dan bollenbacher the rocket ace, he always shows up and you better fear the beard, dan throws his 3 inn of no hit shutout ball, eathan daggett and tyler Reynolds finish up. 2 hits each for roundtree, clem, bowers and miller.
Rockets sweep both games slightly over 3 hours and have field cleaned up for the jay-randolph legion team.
Rocket record now 24-9 league record now 13-4 and assures Portland of western division championship. We have bigger fish to fry down the road in post season play,
League playoffs, we host the national world baseball congress tournament july 29, then the nabf regionals and hopefully world series in Louisville
