June 6, 2012 rockets win 2-1 over Dayton docs

Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland.  The Portland rockets

Traveled to Dayton tues nite, a visit to a baseball complex deluxe at wright state.

The rockets defeated the Dayton docs 2-1.  the win moves portland’s record to 4-0.

A cool drizzly evening cleared off in time for a pitching gem.  Mitch waters was dealing.

The veteran righthander threw 4 no hit innings walking 2 and striking out 4.  mitch threw 51 pitches and even surprised a few hitters with the knuckleball.

Michael caley, markle came on and was just as effective, he went 4 scoreless frames and allowed but 1 hit.  The first Dayton hit came with one out in the 7^th.   Justin miller, Yorktown, pitched the 9^th and closed the deal with a nifty double play to end the game with the tying run on second base. 

Portland scored 2 runs in the opening inning and that was it.  Logan hug walked, a Dalton tinsely double, and  a wild pitch scored one run, billy wellman’s line shot single scored the other.

The rockets outhit the docs 6-2,  tinsely and bryan brudi each had 2 hits, Justin Marrero and  wellman also had hits.

The rockets had a scoring threat in the 8^th with tinsely on 3^rd, brudi on first with no outs, but failed to score  ---

Amazingly, it took only 1 hr. 57 min to complete this titanic struggle,  the reds game last nite 4 hours  wow

This was opening nite for the Dayton docs, their first game ever,  they will compete in the great lakes conference as does our neighboring foe, the grand lake mariners.  It cost $20,000 to plant a franchise in their league, operating expenses $105,000.

Another coach in attendance called me on the way home, to congratulate our 26 member squad,,,,,Dayton had expressed concern if we would make  a worthy competitor -----and truly we aren’t supposed to win these exhibitions,,, they are stocked with division 1 players from all over,  their summer job is to play ball as they live at a host family for the  summer,   ask billy wellman he has been in Kansas the last 2 summers,,,welcome home billy hope you have a great summer,

Tonite our road warriors head to Celina,,,,,a double header first game 5 pm at westview park, billy geeslin the start,  snd game starter dan bollenbacher

I am a Baylor bear baseball fan,,,,they wear green and gold,,,not near as nice as rocket black and gold

I remember stories of perhaps the first rocket drafted,  fireballer jerry shawver  he too by the phillies

I remember more vividly playing cards with on draft day,  awaiting the call from the Montreal expos  also in the 8^th round for Michael dull from berne
