Posted Jun 8/10 - Portland Rockets Score 8 to defeat Napoleon RiverBandits in 11 innings
Good Morning Baseball Fans.  It's a beautiful day in Portland!
The home opener for the 2010 season was a good one. Portland Rockets scored 7 times in the third and once in the eleventh to edge the Napoleon Riverbandits in extra innings. We had a big crowd on hand, Rockets dogs sold like hotcakes and the crowd was in for a real ballgame, wood bat, 5 Rocket pitchers, 21 Rockets played, Drama 9--- I mean 11 innings and a home town victory.  Runkle-Miller Field was still a bit soggy Monday night but it played well and our guests, whom we had beaten twice last week, were impressed. Not many teams have their own diamond like we do. Our players arrived at 4 pm to put this together. Thanks also to our parks department, new sign, new flagpole, and thanks to city guys Smith and Penrod for helping out. Also, special thanks to Rocket Bat Boy, Seth Rupe. Seth, you look good in that Rocket hat.  Also want to thank Rocky Williams, representing the Rocket alumni and Williams Auto Parts, for being willing to throw out the first pitch. Rockets starter, Tyler Palmer of Huntington University went a strong first 3 innings and gave up 3 runs. College teammate, Will Waters, went the next 3 and were were up 7-3. Derek Mounsey of DePauw pitched in the ninth and it was 7-7 and bases loaded with Bandits, no one out! Bill Geeslin came in from 3rd base and shut down the would be rally, a fisted ground out back to Bill and 2 big punch outs, a gutsy and game saving performance. Bill pitched the 10th, he struck out 4 of the 6 he faced...DOMINATION! Tyler Mills also of Huntington came in the 11th inning, did his job and we won in the 11th.  That is three pitchers from Huntington...no wonder.  Their pitching coach is an old Rocket and a dear friend, Mark Flueckiger. He does a great job getting his pitchers to work fast, throw strikes, and change speeds. Love ya in Portland...Flick!  The seven run 3rd inning started with singles by Corey Scott and Heath Williams. The next 3 hitters walked, scoring 2 runs, and then the big blow was a 3-run triple by Mark Isenberg to the wall in left center. The relay throw went out of play and Mark trotted home, clearing the bases. Rocket offense went dormant until called on to win the game in the 11th. Corey Scott walked, Bryce Cook (another Wapahani product) bunted and beat the throw which went down the line and 2 men on. Concepcion Morero, our shortstop for the week, swings at the first pitch and hammers the game winner up the middle. Concepcion will not be with us Tuesday night as he turns pro in the draft. Rockets win 8-7 in 11 innings.  Record for season: Rockets 3-4 and Napoleon 5-3 (all three losses to Portland).  Time of game 3 hrs and 8 min. Rockets had 7 hits from 7 different players. Tonight we return to Westview Park in Celina for a 7:15 start vs. Grand Lake Mariners. Eric VanMatre will be the started. We may see old Rocket,Nick Bruns. Rockets win at home and that is special. We have free admission passes for tonight's game in Celina. If interested, contact Coach Miller.  "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOONA".  Check out the new team website www.ballcharts.com/portlandrockets2010.  See ya in Celina             Randy Miller pg 14
