Record stands at 10-0 as Eagle pitchers toss two no hitters; Leonard blasts home runs 4 and 5

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles baseball squad ran their record to a perfect 10-0 by overpowering Lincoln Christian College from Lincoln, Illinois. The three game series was played on Monday night and Tuesday afternoon. The 10-0 start is the best opening to a season in school history, and sets a new school record for most consecutive victories in a season. Below is a recap of each game.

 March 9, 2009. Game 1
ALC-10: LCC-0
Lamar Williams and CJ Lynn each belted homeruns, and three Eagle pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter (the third in school history) in the 10-0 victory. Lynn led the way offensively with 4 RBI’S. As a team, ALC had 10 hits in 18 at bats. The contest was called after five innings.

Pitchers Trevor Corns, Josh Bedingfield, and Michael Haynes combined to strike out 10 batters while walking only two in a dominating performance

March 10, 2009. Game 2
ALC-30: LCC-1
Lincoln Christian scored one run in the top of the first, then could only watch as the Eagles registered 19 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, enroot to a dominating 30-1 victory. The contest was called after five innings.

ALC had 27 different players swing, yet still pounded out 18 hits in only 31 at bats. They were paced by freshman Will Leonard, the reigning KIAC Player of the Week. The massive 6’6 first baseman continued to pulverize the ball, as he easily blasted a fast ball over the 405 foot center field wall for a grand slam (his fourth of the season). He added a double and had 5 RBI’S in his two at bats. Sophomore pitcher Gerald Branham, batting for the first time collegiately, made his first hit a memorable one as he smashed a two-two pitch over the left field fence for a homer as well.

On the mound, pitcher Todd Duff registered the win as five players combined to throw a one hit shutout.

 March 10, 2009. Game 3
ALC-10: LCC-0
Freshman Will Leonard continued his onslaught on the baseball as the big man went 3-3, and blasted his fifth homerun of the season, to go with 3 RBI’s in the 10-0 win. Tyler Dotson was also 3-3 with 3 RBI’s as the Eagle’s finished with 10 hits in 18 at bats.

The Eagles pitching staff continued their dominance on the mound as five men combined to toss a no hitter (the fourth in school history). Jeremy Hyden picked up the win. Aided with assistance from Brian Boyes, Lewis Michael, Gerald Branham, and Will Ray, Eagle pitching once again overwhelmed their opponents.

The Eagles will be off until Saturday when they head south for their annual spring break trip to South Carolina and Georgia. ALC is scheduled to play at Voorhees College for three games; a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm on the 14th and a single game at 3:00 pm on the 15th. They will then journey to Georgia where they will play Emmanuel College in a 5:00 doubleheader on Monday the 16th. They close out the road trip by facing Atlanta Christian in a 2:00 pm doubleheader on Tuesday the 17th.

After a few days to recuperate, conference foe Brescia University will make the trip to Caney Creek for an important matchup. Doubleheaders are scheduled for both Friday the 20th (beginning at 1:00 pm) and Saturday the 21st (at 12 noon).
