MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon VFW 15-16-year-old teener team won the Joe Hull Memorial tournament Sunday.

Mount Vernon won three games Sunday, including a 3-1 win over Platte in the championship.

Mount Vernon also defeated Irene 2-1 and Yankton 17-0 on the day to advance to the title game.

Mount Vernon started Cody London on the mound against Platte.

He threw five innings, allowing two hits, no earned runs, no walks and he struck out five.

Offensively, Cam Deinert was 2-for-2, Deric Denning was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Nick Miller was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Platte’s Rich Sternberg was the losing pitcher. He threw five innings and gave up seven hit and two earned runs.

Sternberg was 1-for-2 and Cody Wagner was also 1-for-2. They were the only hits for Platte.

Deinert picked up the win against Irene. He went all seven innings, allowing one earned run, four walks, four hits and struck out seven.

London was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Brian Vermeulen had a double, Nate Zens had a double and an RBI and Deinert had a double.

Zens was the winning pitcher against Yankton. He threw two innings and didn’t allow a hit. He also struck out five. Vermeulen pitched the final inning and combined with Zens to throw a no-hitter.

Vermeulen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Zens had a grand slam, Deinert was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and two RBIs and Denning was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Justin Davis added two hits and three RBIs and London had two hits and an RBI.

Mount Vernon (22-2) plays at 7 p.m. today at White Lake against White Lake/Kimball.
