Ryan Ostiguy’s SF in the top of the 9th scored Ichiro Robillard (who had tripled to lead off the inning) and put Coors Light up for good in a 22-20 back and forth brawl (which featured six lead changes) with 2nd place Hive Tuesday Night. The Hive left the bases loaded in the 9th and also stranded the game winning run on base in each of the last three frames.
The dramatic win put a cap on Coors Light’s best regular season (19-9) since 2003 (22-7). The squad finished the year with an impressive 17-3 record against division opponents.
The Coors Light offense, without its typical 3/4/5 hitters, did not skip a beat; reaching base 34 times (24 hits/11 base on balls) with 9 of the 10 hitters reaching base at least three times. Coach Voci achieved player of the game (in a tight race); reaching base 5 times and picking up the win on the hill. Pete “El Caballito” Robillard (15 for his last 15) was also a key contributor (again); knocking in four. Lastly, John Powers chipped in with another important 2-3 (with 2 BB) performance at the bottom of the order.
Ichiro Robillard 3-5, 3B, BB, 3 RBI
Ryan Ostiguy 1-3, 2 SF, 4 RBI
Joe Nichols 3-4, 2B, 3B, 2 BB, 3 RBI
Scott Umbrianna 4-6, 2 2B, 3 RBI
Smokey Wiener 1-4, 2B, 2 BB, 2 RBI
Bobby McCarthy 3-6
Joe Voci 4-5, 2B, BB, RBI
Aaron Benedetti 2-4, 2 2B, BB, RBI
Pete Robillard 1-1, 2 BB, 2 SF, 4 RBI
John Powers 2-3, 2 BB, RBI
Voci improved to 5-6 on the season, as the defense (led by Ostiguy, with 2 highlight reel grabs in extra innings and the solid play by 1B Powers) played relatively well (8 good innings, 1 disastrous inning). Pete Robillard also contributed with another airmail throw which cleared the backstop (his 2nd career backstop airmail; no one else in the league has one (ever)).
Coors Light (#1 seed) now awaits its first round opponent (Bogarts and Moe’s will play two Thursday night to determine the 4 seed), as they begin the post season next week (schedule TBD) and look for their 3rd BMSL B division title.
