Lead off hitter, Smokey Wiener (who had drilled a 2B over the drawn in OF in his prior AB), representing the tying run, lined out sharply to end a well played game by Coors Light (7-18, and losers of 9 of 10). An overall solid effort by the defense enabled the team to hang with first place Lincoln (23-3). However, the long ball and lack of offense ultimately did the club in, as they fell 7-5.
Powered by a pregame dinner of Captain Crunch and a midgame King Size Milky Way, the red hot Jim “Sugar” Antonetti (15-18, 4 HR, 16 RBI in July) once again powered the offense (3-3, R, 2B, RBI). Jeff Stastny (2-3, 2B, RBI), John Powers (2-3, R), and Wiener (2-4, 2 R, 2B) also chipped in. Unfortunately, the remainder of the line up went a meager 5-22.
Steve “DJ Cowboy Steve” Perkins had Lincoln off balance all night but lack of offensive support dropped to him 1-5 on the year. The defense, as mentioned, played excellent led once again by young guns Washburn and Benedetti; who were virtually flawless in the OF.
Coors Light management, scrambling again to field a team, was luckily able to summon three from their Dighton farm club last minute which enabled them to start with a full squad. The team, normally fielding three Robillard brothers, was down two Monday Night; as both Pete (0-3, zero assists, a single post game beer, cooler full of ice only, and multiple errors, which included him narrowly missing sending another ground ball into the bleachers) and Matt “Ichiro – Jacoby” (broken finger, prepping for a Tuesday Night press conference with prepared notes) were MIA.
Coors Light next faces John Murray and 2nd place Fast Lane (18-7), Tuesday Night @6:45.
Coach Voci, pleased with the effort Monday Night, declared Friday Night Pizza Fest at Scotland Field. |
