Countdown to Home Opener Vs Kerry Park Islanders
(Sep 14/09)

Welcome to the Westshore Stingers New Home Page.

Looking to build off their solid performance in their home opener, the Stingers were again up against Kerry Park this time in the Islanders barn. It only took the Isles just 1:20 to get on the scoreboard and they never looked back scoring 5 more times before periods end. Stingers Colin Carter tried to spark the team by pairing up versus Kerry Parks Sheldon Latham in an even tilt but the Islanders kept coming.Having switched goaltenders giving Gavin Cartwright a break, Jonny Webb would have no better support as he faced continued pressure. The Islanders would continue to find the back of the next going uo 10-0 after 40 minutes.Cartwright was back in net for the third and seemed to step up his game as he was able to fend away the rest of the shots he faced in the third frame. The Stingers were able to spoil Edward Dyson's shutout bid by the hands of Gareth Stephens. Being out shot 16-4 in the final period the Stingers fall to the Kerry Park crew 10-1. Final shot count was 60-11.The Stingers face Peninsula on monday back at home still in search for their first win of the season. Game time is at 7:30pm

wasn't the result the Stingers were aiming for as the Saanich Braves took the first matchup of the season 9-3. The play started off well as the Westshore team was able to apply pressure to the Braves goal and control the first half of first period. But it was the Saanich team that opened the scoring on a goal from in close. Not too much longer the Stingers Alex Wong fired a laser from the point which found the back of the net, knotting the game at 1. The rest of the game was a different story having the Stingers systems breaking down as well as continuous undisciplined play which resulted in Saanich opening the doors and taking a 5-1 lead into the third. It didn't stop there as the Braves continued to bear down on the Stinger end of the net. With the score 8-1, Westshore was able to tally another one late on an in close slapshot from Markus Westby.  Alex Wong was able to get his second of the game with another impressive shot from the blue line but was all for not as the Stingers were downed 9-3.The Westshore Stingers look to rebound with a more disciplined game on Monday September 14th as they host their home opener at BEAR MOUNTATIN versus the Kerry Park Islanders.

The second match this preseason dawned a hungrier Stinger group. With the roster decisions being made, the atmosphere at the Westshore camp is intensifying as players battle for roster positions. A sizable crowd attended the evenings tilt which was an overall tight defensive affair.
The Stingers again, took the momentum early in this game as similar to last weeks battle, but this time they were relentless applying all sorts of pressure and getting some decent attempts on net but were having much difficulty beating the Saanich netminder.
Stingers starting goaltender for the night Gavin 'Texas' Cartwright was equal to the task for his half of the game. The younger goalie turned away everything he faced including a clear cut breakaway late in the first period to keep game at an even 0-0.The second half of the game continued on with much of the same after both teams rotated goaltenders. At this point the ice began to slant towards the Stingers end as Saanich appeared to step up the pressure trying to catch the new cold goaltender unprepared. But that only drew the tender to step up his game, making numerous key saves to continue the 0-0 game into the 3rd. The onslaught of shots continued as the Braves pushed and pushed into the Stingers zone finally breaking the deadlock game on a defensive breakdown in the home teams end. Saanich managed to tally 2 more goals on net before finally tallying a 4th, and possibly disputable, called goal bringing the final to a 4-0 victory for the visitors. The Stingers coaching are continually impressed with the elevation of play among the players still at camp and now look forward to icing a more experienced crew versus the Victoria Cougars on Sunday at the Jaun De Fuca Arena. Game time is at 7:30pm

Thursday nights exhibiton game against the Victoria Cougars was deemed a great success for the Stingers coaching and management team. Icing a squad or entire rookies, the Westshore Stingers faced a Cougar team with no less than 10 veteran players dressing. The energetic Stingers came out fast and hard jumping out to an early 2-0 lead just minutes into the first period. The high pace continued as Victoria bounced back with three more of their own to take a 3-2 lead into the second period. The middle frame saw a tighter defensive game being played as the Cougars were only able to mustard one goal in the period and were going into the third period up 4-2. The final stanza had the Cougars again apply more pressure on the Stingers and were able to tally 3 more before games end, bringing the final score to 7-2 in favor of the Cougars. The Stinger coaching staff were extremely pleased with the efforts of the rookie laden group and felt this was a great measuring stick to gauge the young talents ability to play against a team full of experienced Junior calibre players. Some difficult decisions are going to be made in the next week and the Westshore Stingers are greatful to those players who will not be carrying on. More practices will ensue next week with the team's second exhibition game going Thursday August 27th. Game time and opponent TBA.
