Cobourg Spoolon Cardinals take 13th Annual Heritage Harbour Classic

The Cobourg Spoolon Cardinals made it a “threepeat” this past weekend as they beat the Clarington Orioles 8-1 in the final of the 13th Annual Heritage Harbour Classic. The tourney involved 16 ball teams with clubs from Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto, and 8 EOBA teams. Games were played Friday through Sunday at Kendal, Port Hope and Donegan Park. The Kendal Royals took the Consolation Game with a 15-11 win over the Montreal Yankees. Josh DeMattos of the Cardinals was awarded an autographed Darin Fletcher bat for the top batting average in the tournament.

The Cards got off to a good start Friday night with a 4-2 win over the Ajax Spartans. Rick Cromlish got the win and Brad Kenny went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s for the MVP. Saturday morning, the Cards rode the arm of Dave Throop for a 7-4 win over the Brantford Red Sox. Throop had 14 strikeouts in the win and picked up MVP honours. In an evening tilt, the Cards faced Aylmer Quebec who were also 2-0, for rights to get into the playoffs. Seven 4th inning runs finished off the Mariners in a 14-4 mercy win. Bryan Turpin picked up his 4th win of the year, and Eric Sinker went 2 for 2 with 2 walks, 3 runs scored and a RBI for the MVP honours.

In the semis, the Cards drew a tough opponent in the Montreal Yankees. Cards’ ace pitcher, Josh DeMattos went all the way for his 7th win of the season and his 4th shutout in an 8-0 win. Bryan Turpin with a monster ground rule double to break the game open picked up the MVP honours. In the other semi, the Clarington Orioles held off a spirited Kendal comeback to beat the Royals 8-7. In the Consolation final, the Montreal squad were up 8-1 after two and a half innings, but a combination of 3 games in one day and lack of pitching depth did them in. In the bottom of the 3rd, Kendal struck for 13 runs on their way to a 15-11 win over Montreal.

In the final, the Cards scored 3 runs in the 2nd, and 4 in the 5th on their way to an 8-1 win over the Clarington Orioles. Kevin DeMattos tossed a three hitter for the win and game MVP honours. Pitcher/1st baseman Dan Charisz took the honours for the Orioles. The Club would like to thank all their sponsors, especially Sommerville Sports and all the parents and people who helped make this tourney a success. A special thanks goes to the Kendal team who helped with the games in Kendal.
