MUSTANGS BACK ON WINNING TRACK (3/12/09)    The Mandarin Mustang Varsity, 6-4 on the year, broke their 4 game losing skid with a narrow 2-1 triumph over the Fletcher Senators on Thursday.  On a magnificent, balmy evening for hardball the Mustangs relied on the strong right arm of Colby Sims who picked up the complete game win.  Sims, well rested after a couple workhorse performances last week, gave up 2 hits while striking out 11 in another solid effort.  Mandarin fell behind by a run to the Senators in the second, then took the lead as Brian Mathews fourth inning double plated Sage Cree and J.R. Tillet.  Fletcher threatened in the last of the seventh, twice putting a runner in scoring position after a deep one hopper off the wall and a walk with 1 out.  Mandarin Coach Marc Lassiatt stuck with Sims who did not disappoint.  Sims, who was jacking the heater all night, got the last batter with a rare curveball, and a nasty one at that.  The off balance Senator batsman got a piece of the bender, but the always reliable Mustang Catcher Blake "The Snake Pliskin" Berger squeezed the pill for the final out.  This was the Mustangs second win in as many tries this year over Fletcher, both games by the exact 2-1 margin.  The Senators, reputed as one of the more formidable foes on the First Coast will seek revenge on Friday as they face the Mustang again at the “Friendy Confines”…..The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.  Fridays night’s weather is predicted to be perfect for another night of Mandarin hardball so stop on down and support the Mustangs as they fully expect to get another winning streak in gear.

Mandarin is now 5-4 on the year following Friday's loss to Gainesville Buchholz in Gainesville.  Both teams managed 5 hits each, the Mustangs played errorless defense on the night, yet Mandarin could not keep pace despite scoring 3 runs in the 1st.  2 of Gainesville's hit were Home Runs while Mandarin failed to come up with the big hits, leaving several baserunners stranded in scoring position.  The Varsity has some time off to contemplate this 4 game losing streak, then endeavor to resume their winning ways with back-to-back games vs. Fletcher on Thursday and Friday.

A GLIMPSE OF THINGS TO COME??
MUSTANGS TOP FLEMING ISLAND, 11-2, IN PRE-SEASON OPENER(2/10/09)
The first look at the 2009 version of Mustang baseball looks promising...it's just the 1st game of preseason...but an encouraging beginning never the less. Austin Devlin led the pitching with 4 shutout inning and the win. Q jacked a game lead-off tater to get things started on offense and Spencer Herrmann chipped in with 3 doubles in 3 at bats. Oh yes, and the defense...an arguably sore spot in the past...was solid, committing only 1 error (unofficially). A nice start to '09, one more preseason game on Thursday, then on to the regular season next week and one of the toughest schedules in recent memory.
