Scouts come to Gadsden to see Avengers

  

The Canadian Football League and the Southern Indoor Football League have taken a special interest in the Alabama Avengers 2011 roster. Avenger Keith Jones played only one career minor league game before signing a contract with the Erie Explosion to play OT in 2011. Then, on March 19th, A CFL scout from the Calgary Stampeders and SIFL scout for the Explosion were back in Gadsden, hungry to see the Avengers again. Serveral players caught the scouts eyes and they plan to return to Gadsden in coming weeks the see other players in action that missed the Alabama Bengals game on the 19th.

Cooper picks up Player of the Week

Once again, an Avenger takes a national award with Semiprobcs.com. QB Cody Cooper led the Alabama Avengers into battle on March 26th and the troops followed him to victory. Cooper tossed 8 passes completing 6 for 162yds and two touchdowns. His first was a 52 yard strike to former Alabama Crimson Tide standout Ezekial Knight. A PAT try from former Birmingham Steeldog Brian Glover was unsuccessful. Later in the first half, Cooper found the endzone agian, this time on a 1yd run after a 47yd pass to former Troy Trojan Jamare Mathis. D'wayne Childs add the two point conversion for a 14-0 lead. The Hawks would not go quitely, as QB Tim Thompson tossed a TD and added the PAT for a 14-7 Avengers lead at the half. Early in the 2nd half, Cooper found Mathis again, this time in the endzone for an 18yd score. A key play in this drive was a 25yd completion to Lloyd Blevins. The two point conversion was good for a 22-7 lead as lightening endend the game. The Avengers offence ended the night with 162yds passing and 60yds rushing for 222 total yards on 15 plays. Childs had 39yds on 4 carries and caught 1 pass for 6yds. Knight caught 2 passes for 66yds and a score. Mathis hauled in 2 passes for 65yds and a score. Blevins caught Cooper's other completion for 25yds. Montrel Parker intercepted 2 Hawks passes on defence.

Childs named Player of the Week...again!!!

The Avengers are pround to announce that RB Wayne Childs has been selected as the semiprobcs.com Player of the Week for the second time this season. Verses Gadsden rival Alabama Bengals, Childs ran wild rushing for 202 yards on 20 carries. He scored on runs of 35, 37 and 48 yards. His longest run of the night, an 82 yard TD, was called back on a holding call. The Avengers offensive line opened holes all night as the ground game rolled up 290 yards.

Avengers Tame Bengals

For the second time this season the Avengers defeated our cross-town rival by a score of 44-40. The Avengers jumped out to a 24-8 on the legs of star running back D'wayne Childs. In the first quarter, Childs scored on runs of 5 and 15 yards and converted both 2pt conversions. Brian Glover, Mike Smith, Jody Kyle, Josh Nelson and Terry Pulford did a great job of opening up holes on the offensive line. In the second quarter, Montrel Parker returned a Bengals punt 72 yards for another touchdown. Later QB Cody Cooper hit WR Desmond Bothwell on the 2pt conversion. In the 3rd quarter Cooper again found Bothwell for a 37yd TD strike to make it 38-16 to end the 3rd quarter. The 4th qtr was a shootout. The Bengals just wouldn't go away scoring 24 4th quarter points. But Childs just got stronger in the last 15 minutes of play. He scored on runs of 54 and 63 yards to finish the night with 328 yards on 15 carries and 4 TD's. QB Cody Cooper completed 5 of 8 passes for 128 yards and 1 TD. The offense finished the game with 474 total yards.The Avengers improved to 6-1 with the win.

Avengers LT Keith Jones signes SIFL Contract

The Alabama Avengers are proud to announce that the Erie Explosion have signed Avenger Keith Jones for 2011. The 6'7 290lb Jones, a former Samford Bulldog and Hueytown product, looks to battle for a starting position on the Explosion OL. The entire Avengers family would like to wish Keith the best of luck!
