BD Legion Holds on Against Menasha, Will Play for State Championship Tuesday at 1:00 PM

Beaver Dam Post #146 Senior American Legion/White Construction baseball club held on to a 3-2 victory Monday afternoon at the 2013 Wisconsin AA American Legion State Tournament in Luxemburg hosted by Kewaunee County.  The victory moves Beaver Dam into the championship game against River Falls Tuesday at 1:00 PM.

Sam White threw 6 strong innings to keep a strong Menasha lineup off balanced.  The crafty lefty struck out 2 and gave up 2 runs in his performance.

Head Coach Joe Loizzo remarked, "Sam had a coming-of-age game.  In the biggest game of his life, he pitched a gem against one of the best team's in Wisconsin baseball (Menasha)."

With the score tied at 2 in the bottom of the 6th and 2 outs, Jackson Bailey singled through the left side to score Nick Schmitt and give BD a 3-2 lead going into the 7th.

Bryce Schmitt came into the 7th to attempt to close the game.  Schmitt struck out the first batter, and got the next batter to fly out deep to left.  Things got tense in with two outs.

Schmitt hit the next batter on a curve ball and the next hitter singled to centerfield.  The runner on first advanced to third on the play and the batter moved to 2nd as a result of the throw to third.  BD elected to intentionally walk white-hot hitting Tyler Thompson to load the bases with 2 outs.  The move paid off for BD as Schmitt got Nathan Jack to ground out back to the mound and the put out ended the thriller of a game.

One win separates Beaver Dam with the 2013 state title.  River Falls, a well coached and talented team, stands in their way.  River Falls must beat Beaver Dam twice Tuesday to claim the title.  BD needs 1 more win as the tournament's only undefeated team in the double elimination tournament.

A state championship would be Beaver Dam's 6th title and first since back-to-back titles in 2000 & 2001.  BD also won in 1982, 1984, and 1989.

Tuesday promises to be an exciting day.  For those that are coming up to hopefully watch history, drive safe and bring friends.  For those listening in radioland, tune into WBEV 1430 AM for full game coverage.  We are blessed to have so many involved in making this happen throughout the years, it would not be possible without the efforts of former players & coaches, and a devotion towards helping Beaver Dam youth succeed.

Best of luck tomorrow Beaver Dam American Legion Post #146/White Construction!

BD Tops Sturgeon Bay 10-9 in Rollercoaster Affair

Beaver Dam Post #146 Senior American Legion/White Construction baseball club scored twice in the bottom of the 6th to tie and take the lead over Sturgeon Bay Sunday night in Luxemburg at the Wisconsin AA American Legion State Tournament and Bryce Schmitt came on to close out the game as Beaver Dam defeated Sturgeon Bay 10-9 in a wild affair.

Beaver Dam recorded 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, sprinting out to a 7-0 lead.  Sturgeon Bay continued to chip away at the lead until overtaking Beaver Dam in the 3rd inning with 6 run inning and a 9-8 lead.  BD would get the tying and go-ahead runs in the 6th when Tyler Budde walked with the bases load and Sam White's infield single scored Parker Sadowski.  Bryce Schmitt came on in the top of the 7th to record the save in a 1-2-3 manner.  Alec Priewe threw 3+ strong innings in relief to record the win.

Beaver Dam will now play Menasha Monday afternoon at 4:00 PM.  Should BD win, the winner of River Fals/Sturgeon Bay would have to defeat BD twice to win the state championship.  Should BD fall tomorrow, Menasha would play the winner of River Falls/Sturgeon Bay with #Post 146 playing that winner for the state championship.  Regardless, Beaver Dam will play for a state title on Tuesday!

Post #146 Stays Hot, Beats River Falls 13-3 in 5 innings

Beaver Dam Post #146 Senior American Legion/White Construction baseball bashed its way into what Head Coach Joe Loizzo calls the "driver's seat" game by blasting River Falls 13-3 in 5 innings Saturday night.

BD (25-6) trailed 2-0 when River Falls scored 2 runs with 2 out in the 1st inning.  Post #146 answered back by getting a run in bottom of the 2nd to trail 2-1.  The key turning point in the inning and game was the combination of Quinn McCallum and Bryce Schmitt's at-bats.  Quinn McCallum worked a full count, 9 pitch walk to load the bases for lead off hitter Schmitt.  The patience by McCallum was quickly rewarded.  Bryce Schmitt fell behind in the count 1-2 but took an outside fastball to the right field gap, plating all 3 runners.  When running to third to stretch his hit into a triple, River Falls overthrew 3rd base allowing Schmitt to scamper home and turn the tide in the game.

"Quinn's at-bat gave Bryce a chance and he took advantage of his opportunites by staying back and driving that ball," said Coach Loizzo.

From the 2nd inning, BD would continue to scorch opposition pitching.  BD tacked on 3 in the 3rd inning and 5 runs in the 5th to win via the 10-run rule.  BD finished with 15 hits.

"We got contributions up and down our lineup and hit the ball hard.  We have a very senior dominated crew that has been here before, they are very focused and playing well.  River Falls is a good team, they have beaten a lot of good teams this year.  Fortunately, we are hot right now."

Beaver Dam American Legion Post #146/White Construction will play Sturgeon Bay at 8:00 PM Sunday night in Luxemburg.  Coach Loizzo labels this the "driver's seat" game because the winner of this game will play for a state title.  Sturgeon Bay defeated Holmen 2-1 in a tense pitching duel Saturday night.

Thanks to all fans that follow our Beaver Dam baseball players.  We hope to see you Sunday night at 8:00 PM to cheer on your Post #146!  Go Beaver Dam!

BD, Schmitt Blank Waupaca 10-0 to Open Tournament Play

Beaver Dam Post #146 Senior American Legion/White Construction baseball (24-6) team did its best Florida-Georgia Line impersonation Friday night to open play against Waupaca, "cruise."  BD ace Bryce Schmitt gave up 1 hit in the game and stymied Waupaca's hitters as BD's offense rolled to a 10-0 victory.

Beaver Dam will play Saturday at 5:00 PM against River Falls, 5-3 winners over Menasha.  Recent history suggests the BD/RF games will be a good contest.  Beaver Dam defeated River Falls in the 2nd round of the 2011 State Tournament but lost to River Falls in the state championship game 3 days later.

BD Sr. Legion 1 win Away from State

Beaver Dam Post #146 Senior American Legion/White Construction baseball club got what Head Coach Joe Loizzo calls a recipe for success in both games at the Union Grove AA Regional: good pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting.  The results were a 12-1 win over host Union Grove in 6 innings and a 10-3 victory over Portage in the 7:30 PM undefeated game.

With the two wins, BD (22-6) stands 1 win away from a return trip to the AA Wisconsin state tournament.

"We have a very senior led group and they know how to compete.  We got the key hits when needed and our pitchers (Bryce & Tony Schmitt) gave us chances to win.  As a coach, that's all you can ask of your players.  We saw good pitching today and stuck with our approach at the plate and it paid off.  Union Grove and Portage are good teams," said Loizzo.

Sunday's action sees Portage and Union Grove playing at noon with the winner playing BD at 2:30 PM in Union Grove.  The loser of the Portage/Union Grove game is eliminated from the tournament with their 2nd loss.  Deforest was eliminated earlier in the day.

With the win over Portage, Beaver Dam will play for the regional championship at 2:30 PM.  A win would send them to state. Should BD fall, both teams would play again Monday for the regional championship and a state berth.

As always, come back to bdlegion.com for all tournament updates and information as BD Legion strives for their 22nd Regional Championship in 32 years, and their 6th state title.
