| Vic Darnsbourgh had kept the Sandvipers from stringing together any hits. Having stranded 9 base runners over the first 7 innings the Sandvipers couldn't put anything together. In the bottom of the 8th that changed Steve Wright reached on a WP strike 3, Andrew Zoulko then followed with a single to right. Paul Haack strikes out swinging then with 2 strikes but the runners advance on a passed ball. Scott Bergset then gets the Sandvipers on the board with a 2 Strike single to right driving in both runs. Phil Reardon then Strikes out swinging then with 2 outs Greg Shepard singles to drive in Bergset. Sandvipers then load the bases with a walk to Nate Hare and Steve Johnston reaches when hit by a pitch. The threat ends there when Chris Ponto grounds out to the short stop to end the inning. In the 9th inning it starts bleak with Wright and Zoulko both striking out to start things, the Sandvipers are down to their last out, Paul Haack hits a double in the left center field gap, and then is followed by Scott Bergset who hits the game tying RBI single. Reardon strikes out to end the innings to push it to extras. In the 10 inning Greg Shepard lead off with his 3rd hit of the night a single to left center, then Nate Hare struck out after a long at-bat where he fouled off 8 pitches. Steve Johnston then skyed a fly ball to right with the right fielder dropped and the runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd. Chris Ponto then was intentially walked and with a 1 strike count the next pitch was in the dirt down and away, Canfield the Braves catchers had it kick off his right shin guard about 15 feet away in a bang bang play at the plate Greg Shepard scored to secure the Sandvipers win. Clay Schmessier who came in relief in the 7th threw 4 scoreless innings only giving up 2 singles one of which didnt leave the infield. He recorded 5 Strik Outs and picked up the win. Matt Berkey recorded 7 strike outs in 3 innings of relief and gave up one run. With the win the Sandvipers advance to the Championship game on Thursday Nov 10th where they will face the winner of the Braves and Dodgers game this Tuesday. Since this is a double elimination format the Sandvipers must be beat twice while either team they will face comes in with a 1-1 record. Championship game is Nov 10 at 7pm at Pecolle (Rainbow Family Park). |
