Extra base hits were the secret ingredient Friday night for Campbellsville University to sweep Pikeville College by large margins, 14-4 and 18-2, in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Tiger Field.

The Tigers collected 34 hits in the two games, including nine doubles, two triples and two home runs.

Campbellsville collected three doubles during the fifth inning of the second game, which helped lead to six-run inning and break a CU record for doubles in a season. Luke Gadow of Pollock Pines, Calif., doubled to left to tie the CU team record (102) and score Brian Chase for the first run of the inning. Taylorsville, Ky., native Craig Edwards followed with a two-run double to break the record and Jameel Ziadeh (Roseville, Calif.) doubled to left-center two batters later to score two more runs and push the record to 104 doubles in a season. CU set the previous record of 102 doubles in a season in 2005 and 2007.

Richie Rowland, who homered into the street beyond right field during the first game, led CU's offense with a 5-for-6 day at the plate and seven RBIs. He had 10 total bases, as he collected a double, three singles and a walk to go with the homer. Joining him with five hits and 10 total bases was Ziadeh, who doubled three times and walked twice to accompany his two singles. Logan Smith also collected five hits and is one of four Tigers to score four runs in the doubleheader.

Alex Ponich and Gadow each had four hits in the series. Ponich hit his fourth home run of the season in the first game. It was his first homer since hitting three in six games from Feb. 28 to March 6. He also scored four times, doubled and drove in two runs.

Ian Pick and Jared Lunardi got the starts for CU on the mound. Lunardi went the distance in the second game to improve to 6-2 on the year. He allowed two runs off six hits and struck out nine.

Campbellsville (37-18) advances to the next round of the MSC Tournament, which will be hosted at Tiger Field, May 6-9. The Tigers will face the lowest seeded team of the four that advance. As of April 30, third-seed Georgetown College and fourth-seed St. Catharine College also advanced to the next round. The University of Rio Grande and West Virginia Tech continue their series May 1 with Rio leading the series 1-0.
