Posted May 20/09 - CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASEBALL DAY PROCLAIMED FOR FRIDAY, MAY 22 |
By Joan C. McKinney, news and publications coordinator
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Friday, May 22 is "Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball Day" as a result of a joint city/county proclamation Tuesday behind Hawkins Athletic Complex. Campbellsville Mayor Brenda Allen and Taylor County Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers read the proclamation which proclaimed the "entire CU baseball Tigers team members have demonstrated a season of excellence, academic achievement, servant leadership and extraordinary performance on the baseball field and have brought national attention to Campbellsville University and the Campbellsville-Taylor County community."
Allen and Rogers spoke about their pride for the Tigers' accomplishment of playing in their first-ever Avista NAIA World Series. The Tigers play Lee University at 11:30 a.m. EDT May 22 in Lewiston, Idaho.
The proclamation also expressed gratitude to Coach Beauford Sanders, and his coaching staff, who "have done a tremendous job in motivating the young men on the Tigers baseball team and Coach Sanders has now won 835 games during his career as a head coach."
The proclamation also mentions the accomplishment of pitcher Bryan Fuller for his "remarkable performance in the NAIA regional by pitching 21 consecutive scoreless innings in three games over a little more than 24 hours."
The baseball team is 39-10 and won the NAIA regional tournament in Lindenwood, Mo., May 15 to advance to the World Series. Campbellsville University President Michael V. Carter spoke words of support and encouragement to the team during the proclamation ceremony, and Baseball Coach Beauford Sanders expressed his appreciation to the local officials, faculty and staff who gathered to see off the team. Other visitors included ESPN personnel including Jeremy Schaap, well-known reporter.
An interview done with ESPN is scheduled to air Thursday, May 21, at 11 p.m. on SportsCenter. An interview done with Coach Beauford Sanders by John Chowning, vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president, will air tonight on TV-4 on Comcast Cable Channel 10 at 7:30 o'clock. Bryan Fuller was also interviewed by Benji Kelly, vice president for development. The show, which features both Sanders and Fuller, will be repeated at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21.
The proclamation further stated that "all of us in this community are cheering for the CU Tigers Baseball Team in the NAIA World Series.
