LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Three Mid-South Conference student-athletes played errorless defense through the 2010 baseball season, leading the selections of the 2010 Mid-South Conference's Rawlings-NAIA Conference Gold Glove Team, announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Lindsey Wilson College outfielder Dustin Murphy maintained a 1.000 fielding percentage through the year as he recorded 83 putouts and four assists in center field for the Blue Raiders. He is the only player in the conference with more than 25 chances to remain errorless through the entire season and postseason. Campbellsville University outfielder Jameel Ziadeh joined Murphy with error free baseball through the regular season. His one error came in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, dropping him to a .988 fielding percentage with 82 putouts and three assists.
The third perfect fielder is Lindsey Wilson pitcher Derek Cape who finished error free in his 13 games. Cape also faced 278 batters over 67-1/3 innings without throwing a wild pitch. He recorded 61 strikeouts and nine assists through the year.
The highest fielding percentage below 1.000 for a player making the Gold Glove team belongs to University of the Cumberlands first baseman Josh Wood, who had 328 putouts, 23 assists and just one error through 352 chances in 51 games.
Campbellsville catcher Richie Rowland is next with a .993. He recorded 259 putouts, 21 assists and threw out nine opposing base runners. Georgetown College outfielder Chris Wood rounded out the outfield Gold Glovers with a .969 fielding percentage. He had 120 putouts, five assists and four errors through 57 games.
Joining Wood in the infield is St. Catharine College second baseman Justin Witt (.967) and shortstop Ryan Mangione (.955), along with University of Rio Grande third baseman Tyler Schunk (.939).
The winners of the conference Gold Glove will be up for consideration of the 2010 Rawlings-NAIA Gold Glove Team, which will be selected by the NAIA-American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Selection Committee. A total of nine players were selected to the best in the fielding category. The team will be announced in late May.
