Campbellsville University baseball announced its sixth member of the 2010 recruiting class. Anthony Wirkkala of Ilwaco, Wash., is the latest addition for the Tiger roster in 2011. The right-handed pitcher is transfering from Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore., where he struck out 49 batters in 55.3 innings of work in 2010.
"We are very pleased to announce the signing of Anthony Wirkkala. We believe that Anthony will be a big arm for us next season. He has an extremely live arm and has huge upside with a ton of potential. He is a big physical kid who stands at 6-foot-6 and has a great deal of movement on his stuff. He is only going to get better with time," said CU assistant coach Chris Lewis, who recruited Wirkkala. "He is a great kid that comes from a great family, and we believe that Anthony will be a great fit for our program. He is going to start the summer playing for the Corvallis Knights, one of the premier teams in the West Coast League."
Wirkkala played his freshman year of collegiate ball as the closer at Central Washington University.
During his high school career, Wirkkala was named an All-State selection as a senior. All-League his freshmen year First Team All-League the next three years as a pitcher.
Wirkkala joins five other signees from the Northwest and West Coast:
