It appears that the presence of the National Weather Service and all it's radar equipment just a quarter mile from Storn Red Bird Stadium has given the Chanhassen Red Birds nothing in the way of a Home Town Advantage during the early part of the season.
Counting today's (May 22nd) game scheduled with the Henderson Tigers, a total of 6 games have been cancelled or postponed so far this campaign. The Red Birds were to have hosted Glencoe, Chaska and Webster in non-league games, and Prior Lake and Henderson in River Valley League games. Also, the game at Winthrop on May 8th was postponed until July 9th, due to wet field conditions on the western end of the league. It is uncertain if the non-league games will be rescheduled.
Weather is playing havoc with our neighbors to the south, the Chaska Cubs. With anticipated wet field conditions at Chaska Athletic Park due to spring flooding, the Red Bird game originally scheduled for June 9th against the Cubs, has now moved to Storm Red Bird Stdium on June 16th. The Cubs have juggled much of their schedule and plan to host their first home game of the RVL season against the Jordan Brewers on June 30th. We can only hope that dry weather blows in from the west before that day.
A quick check on the River Valley League website shows that no less than 9 games on the schedule have been postponed since the season began on May 1. No doubt, most of these games will be made up later in the year, but the scheduling will get more difficult as many of the fields that host the "Town Ball" teams are also used for other community ball teams as well. This year's start to league play will certainly be remembered as one of the wettest on record.
