Chanhassen Red Bird fans were starving for a game on Friday night, and the Team didn't disappoint them, serving up 14 runs on 12 hits against an overmatched, St. Boni team; Red Birds beat the Saints 14 - 1 in 7 innings.
Casey Malmgren took the mound for the locals and pitched 5 strong innings; earning the win by allowing just 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 and allowing no walks. Jeff Strand pitched a 1-2-3 6th inning and newcomer, Andrew Roy (Minnetonka grad of 2010) closed out the game with a strong inning in his first appearance as a Red Bird.
Chanhassen broke their bats loose in the 2nd inning scoring 7 runs on just 4 hits with the help of 2 walks, 2 hit batters and 2 wild pitches from the Saints starter and game loser, Winston Mullet. The Red birds got 3 more in the 3rd and 4th innings and SS Nate Swenson completed the scoring in the 5th with his 4th run scored for the game. Catcher, Justin Thompson was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's; LF Tom Bergner scored 3 times, had 1 hit and an RBI; CF Jeff Pavlovich scored twice and had 2 RBIs; 2B T. J. Gulden scored twice and got the game's first 2 RBIs on a clutch single to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 2nd.
With the Red Birds having 7 games cancelled or postponed so far this season, Manager Chris Reuvers was greeted at the ball park by 20 ball players hungry to get in the game. To his credit, he got 19 of the 20 players into the score-shortened game. The key highights were the Red Bird pitching that was solid with 6 Strikeouts, only one Walk and no Hit batters. The fielding was solid as well, with no errors and a fielding gem by 2B Jeff Douglas, who grabbed a short pop fly with a lunge and gymnastic roll toward the pitcher's mound.
Red Birds next Home game is Sunday, June 5th at 2:00 PM when they host the Le Sueur Braves for Red Bird Alumni and Senior Ctizen Appreciation game. Weather should be good, so come on out to cheer your local "Town Ball" team.
