Posted Jun 29/11 - RED BIRDS SQUEAK BY SAINTS, 2-1

River Valley League All-Star, Starting Pitcher CASEY MALMGREN pitched a complete game 4 hitter, allowing 1 run on 4 singles, allowing 3 walks and struck out 6 Saints batters and got the GWRBI in the bottom of the 7th to power the Red Birds over the visiting Saints on Wednesday evening.

T.J. Gulden started the scoring in the bottom of the first when he reached first on a mishandled grounder by 2B man for the Saints.  1B Zach Swenson followed with a single to short center. RF Cary McLaughlin lifted a soft looper to center that T.J. had to wait on, but got to third, with Swenson advancing to 2nd base.  All-Star Selection, C Justin Thompson then drew a five pitch walk that plated Gulden for the first run of the game.  Zach Neubauer struck out swinging to end the Red Bird threat leaving the bases loaded.

The Saints responded in the top of the 2nd when LF C.J. Siewert lined a single to left. 3B Jesse Munsterman dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Siewert to 2nd base.  1B Jeff Menk then drilled a single to left center to easily score Siewert on the play and the score was tied, and remained that way till the 7th inning.

With the score tied at 1-1, NATE SWENSON led off the bottom of the 7th with a double to center field, advanced to third on TONY MARENGO'S single up the middle, and scored the go ahead run on Malmgren's grounder to short stop. (The one and only run scored in the game by someone with a full first name.)

It was Chanhassen City Employee Recognition Game and the home town crowd at Storm Red Bird Stadium enjoyed the evening!  A beautiful night for a ball game for a change; with the Mayor Tom Furlong delivering a ceremonial first pitch to kickoff the pregame festivities.

Many Thanks to the volunteers from the Chanhassen Historical Society who helped run the ticket gate and the concessions stand.

Next Home game, 4th of July at 6:00 PM against the New Ulm Kaiserhoff.
