(Story Corrected to properly give the Win to Thompson of Chanhassen Red Birds)
Red Bird Third Baseman, John Gulden participated in the Home Run Derby at the RVL - DRS All Star game on Friday night. John hit two homeruns in the Derby and helped the RVL beat the DRS All-stars with a total of 20 Homeruns to 18 for the DRS crew.
Dusty Olynyk of the Prior Lake Jays won the individual title with a total of 8 dingers in the final round compared to Nate Rost of Fairbault Lakers who got 7.
John Gulden started the game at 3rd base for RVl and walked in his first two plate appearances. Justin Thompson relieved the starting pitcher, Steve Papke (New Ulm Kaiserhoff), in the 4th inning and pitched a scoreless inning. RVL's 2 runs in the top of the 5th gave Thompson (pitcher of record) the win for the RVL.
Jeremy Chlan of Elko hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 3rd inning to give DRS an early lead. But Dusty Olynyk (Prior Lake Jays) hit a two run shot in the top of the 5th to give RVL the lead.
The pitching dominated the rest of the game on both sides, but Adam Johnson (Belle Plaine) pitched the last two scoreless innings for the RVL to earn the save and preserve the win for Thompson. This is the third win in a row for the RVL league.
Dusty Olyniyk earned the MVP award for the RVL all-stars.
