Posted Jul 11/11 - RED BIRDS BEAT WINTHROP, 7-3 SATURDAY NIGHT

The Red birds traveled west to Winthrop on Saturday, July 9, and beat the West Division team by a score of 7-3.  Justin Kurth got the start for the Red Birds and pitched 6 solid innings allowing just 3 runs, all in the 6th inning.  He scattered 7 hits, got 7 strikeouts and allowed only 1 walk.

The Red Birds offense got going in the 3rd inning with a lead off single by Kurth who scored from second on Tony Marengo's single.  Tony stole second and scored on Zach Swenson's single for a 2-0 lead.   All Star Homerun Derby participant, John Gulden scored after a single and three Winthrop errors in the inning.  Marengo led off the 5th with a triple and scored on Gulden's second single of the game.  Gulden reached 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on All Star Justin Thmpson's single leaving the score a 5-0 after 5 innings.

The Eagles got their 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning with a single, a walk and another two singles off Kurth.

Andrew Roy relieved Kurth in the bottom of the 7th and worked three scoreless innings alllowing 5 harmless singles and striking out 6 batters including all three in the 8th inning sandwiched around two singles.

The Red birds got two more runs in the top of the 9th inning with Zach Swenson and Jeff Douglas scoring on Justin Thompson's single.

Tony Marengo scored twice and got an RBI as he collected a single, double and a triple, falling a homerun short of hitting for the cycle.  Zach Swenson also had three hits, an RBI and scored once.  John Gulden had two singles, scored twice and got an RBI.  Justin Thompson also got two hits and three RBI's.  Chanhassen left 10 men on base, including 7 men in scoring position.

Justin Kurth got the victory for the Red Birds with Andrew Roy getting the save.   

Andy Melius worked 6 innings to take the loss for the Eagles.  Joe Klenk took the mound in relief in the 7th inning for the Eagles.  Ryan Panning and Dan Anderson each had two singles for Winthrop.
