Farming were defeated by Lake Henry in the Region 15C tournament, 5-4 in a competetive and entertaining game held in Spicer.
The Flames struck right away in the first inning. Zach Posterick worked a walk from draftee and starter, Scott Schroeder. Craig Klein was hit by a pitch. Craig Holthaus reached on an error by the third basement to load the sacks. Chris Wehseler delivered a single to center to give Farming an early 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Derrick Roush led off with a double to deep left. Craig Rausch walked, and Ian Hoffarth sacrificed both runners up a base. Zach Posterick delivered a clutch 2-RBI single to left, scoring both Derrick and Craig, and tying the game at 3.
In the sixth, Zach led off with an infield single. Craig Klein singled to left, and both runners move up 90 feet after a groundout. Zach then scored on a wild pitch, cutting the Lake Henry lead to 5-4. However, the Flames were unable to score again.
There was definitely some frustration this morning on the part of Farming hitters, as we outhit Lake Henry 12-6 and put the leadoff batter on in seven of the nine innings. But Lake Henry came up with the big outs when they needed them.
Brad Mergen pitched all eight innings for Farming, allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out eight.
Although the results were not we wanted, on behalf of the fans we'd like to congratulate the guys for leaving it all out on the field this weekend. The ballclub hustled, worked hard, kept up the pressure, and played two good ballgames against SCL rivals. A lot of hard hit balls ended up right at fielders...baseball truly is a "game of inches". It was great to be watching the club play meaningful games in August.
Thanks, too, to the legion of fans who supported the team all season!
