The Red Birds visited the Jordan Mini-Met last night and played a great game against a very good Class "C" Team. Justin Thompson worked 7 strong innings and entered the bottom of the 8th allowing no runs, on just 1 hit and had a 3-0 lead.
The Brewers got 3 singles to load the bases and then a fielders choice scored the first run. A single got another run across. Thompson then got another strikeout and it looked like the Red Birds would escape the inning with the lead. But Scott Hollingsworth re-entered the game after being relieved as pitcher in the top of the 8th inning, looking to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, punched a single through the left side of the infield to drive in the 3rd run to tie the game at 3 each.
Lukas Penovich relieved JT in the bottom of the 9th, and yielded a lead off single to LF Mitch Ries; a sacrifice bunt put the winning run on 2nd. Brewers first baseman, Tim Garnhardt then lifted a drive to right center that landed on the warning track and the winning run trotted across home plate.
Thompson started and worked 8 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits, striking out 7. Lukas Penovich took the loss.
Zach Swenson went 2-5 with two singles and drove in Jeff Pavlovich with the first run in the 3rd inning, then scored in the top of the 8th. Nate Swenson was 2-2 in 4 plate appearaances, drawing two walks as well. His single in the top of the 8th off reliever Mike Beckius, drove in the his brother Zach for the 3rd Red Bird run. Trevor Patterson. DH, got a single in the top of the 8th inning to drive in David Naughtin to send SP Scott Hollingsworth to the bench for reliever Beckius.
Pavlovich, T.J Gulden and John Gulden also singled for the Red Birds.
Trent Bohnsock worked the top of the 9th for Jordan to notch the win for the Division leading Brewers.
A tough loss for the Red Birds against a good Brewers team that the Red Birds face again at home in the second to last game of the regular season on July 18th.
Next game: Against Hit Dawg at home on Saturday night, for a 7:30 PM start at Storm Red Bird Stadium.
