Posted Jul 1/13 - Huge Crowd sees Red Bird win over Le Sueur, 7-0

The Chanhassen Red Birds defeated the Le Sueur Braves on Sunday night, 7-0 on the strength of Justin Kurth's complete game shutout. Kurth allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 5 Brave batters.

The Red Birds were cheered by more than 100 Little League baseball and softball players, and Boy and Cub Scouts for annual Scouting and little league recognition game. More than 225 in attendance saw a great game on a beautiful evening for baseball.

The Red Birds got on the board in the 2nd inning with an opening walk to Justin Thompson by LP Matt Lewis. ?DH Kurt Jantscher followed with a single to left. With 1B Zach Swenson batting, Thompson stole third, and then Zach laced double to left center that scored Thompson and left Kurt at 3rd base.

Jantscher easily scored on Lewis' WP, while Zach moved to third. Kurth then drew a walk and Casey Malmgren hit a grounder to short and Kurth was out at second on the fielder's choice, but Zach scored from 3rd for the third run of the inning.

With Malmgren on 1st, Jeff Pavlovich looped a drive down the RF line that RF Ryan Wolf dove for and missed. Casey motored the full distance to score from first and Pav had a triple. T.J. Gulden then hit an infield grounder that the SS misplayed and Pav scored the final run of the inning. REd Birds lead, 5-0.

Red Birds completed the scoring in the 6th inning on singles by Jantscher, Zach Swenson and Malmgren, Jantscher scoring on Malmgren's single and Zach scoring on Lewis' second WP of the game. 7-0

Riesgraf, Jantscher and Swenson had two hits each, and Kurt and Zach each scored twice.

Kurth was splendid on the mound for the Red Birds. He reitred the side in order in the 1st and 2nd. After a lead off single in the 3rd, the runner was erased on a nifty inning ending double play of John Gulden to T.j. Gulden to Zach Swenson.

Kurth faced only 30 batters over the 9 innings allowing only one runner to get to 2nd base. Kurth also lowered his team leading ERA to 0.58 in 31 innings pitched.

Red Birds are at home on Tuesday evening to the Prior Lake Jays. Game time is 7:30 PM and is sponsored by the Chanhassen Lions.
