Capital City vs Tualatin

Capital City started out the tournament against a tough Tualatin; so tough that they went 18-0 in the Clackamas league last season. The Black Sox started out as cold as the 20 degree weather they were playing in, putting up 0 runs through three innings. Fortunately Capital had Ben DeSaulnier on the mound while they were figuring it out at the plate; Ben pitched four innings only giving up one unearned run for the Sox. Going into the 5th the game was deadlocked at 1-1 after a Connor Goff ground ball scored DeSaulnier, then Tualatin struck for one more in the top of the 5th off Trent Hardin to put the score at 2-1. Then the Black Sox got it going in the bottom of the 5th; Cody Ratliff led off the inning with a single through the infield, followed by a Daniel Zavala walk. Ratliff then stole third base, setting up an RBI ground ball by Jordan Barchus to tie the game at 2-2. Then with two outs and two on base Zach Hammerschmidt came up with the biggest hit of the game for the Sox, with a two RBI double over the centerfielder’s head to score both Zavala and Travis Klampe. Hardin gave up one more on the mound in the top of the 6th but Capital City got it right back in the bottom half making the final score 5-3. DeSaulnier and Hardin gave up one earned run combined on the mound to lead the Black Sox in their first game of pool play.

Capital City vs Sisters Outlaws

Capital got it going from the very beginning at the plate and never slowed down in this one; Putting up two runs in the first and then eight in the second. Daniel Zavala pitched three shutout innings for the Black Sox, only giving up one hit and striking out three on the mound. A grandslam by Travis Klampe led the offensive highlights for the Sox, Ben DeSaulnier was also 4-4 at the plate. Andrew Kettelson, Trent Hardin, and Cody Ratliff all had 3 hits for Capital City. The game ended after four innings with Capital City on top 20-2. This win gave Capital City first place in their pool and second seed in the bracket play for the rest of the tournament.
