(1) Morden Mohawks vs (3) Baldur Regals
You may get a feeling of deja vu when seeing the matchup for the Border League Championship in 2018. The Mohawks and Regals have faced off for the title 4 times previously, in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Each of those series lasted at least 4 games, with the championship being decided by a winner take all Game 5 in both 2014 and 2015. 2018 may feature more of the same as the Regals and Mohawks split their pair of regular season matches. In fact, since Morden entered the league in 2012 these two franchises have played a total of 36 games head to head (regular season and playoffs). The Mohawks hold the edge overall by the narrowest of margins with 17 wins to their credit compared to 16 for the Regals. 3 games ended in a draw. The only thing that may be different in this series than previous years is that this year Game 1 will be played in Morden. In each of the previous 4 series the Regals entered as the higher seed.
Scouting Report
Morden – The Mohawks have rattled off 6 straight victories to this point of the 2018 playoffs. The offence put on a show in round 1 and has put up 8 or more runs in 4 of the 6 games overall. However, the pitching grabbed the headlines in the semi-finals. Prior to a 4 run rally in the 7th inning of game 3 by the Pilots, Mohawks pitching had allowed only 4 runs over the previous 20 innings. In addition, 4 different pitchers have recorded a victory on the mound this postseason.
Baldur – The Regals punched their ticket to the championship series with back to back series wins in 4 games. While they may have had a couple of hiccups along the way, the Regals have been dominant in their 6 victories with a +30 run differential. The key has been the dominance displayed on the mound. In their semi-final victory over the Twins, Raegan Johnson and Jordan Wickens combined to pick up all 3 wins and allow only 3 runs on 15 hits, a carryover from the previous series in which Wickens posted 2 victories allowing only 2 runs.
Keys to Series Victory
Morden - 'Home sweet home' - The Mohawks are 4-0 at home this postseason and were undefeated at Buhler field during the regular season. With games 1, 3 and potentially 5 all being played there, taking advantage of home field will be vital
Baldur - 'Make History Repeat Itself' - In the Regals vs. Mohawks head to head matchups in the playoffs, the road team has recorded 13 wins and only 2 losses. Keep that trend alive and success is only a roadtrip away.
