Posted May 14/12 - Clutch Pitching and Defense won the Game

The Red Birds had three things going for them in Yesterday's game against the Islanders; and each of them contributed to the 8 - 4 win to open the Season.

CLUTCH HITTING -

The Red Birds stranded 11 players on the bases during the game and 7 of them in scoring position, but Reid Teigland had the very timely bases loaded triple over the center fielder's head in the 6th inning to break the game open with a 6 - 3 lead.  Jeff pavlovich then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Teigland to make it a 4 run inning.  Jeff Pavlovich then came through again in the 7th inning,  T.J. Gulden opened the bottom of the 7th with a single to left center; moved to second on a walk to Teigland after strikesouts by Penovich and Kemble.  Then Pavlovich laced a single to right center to score the speedy Gulden from second.    Thsi kind of timely hitting was missing at several points last season.  perhaps a good omen for the 2012 Red Birds

CLUTCH PITCHING and CLUTCH DEFENSE -

Jon Waltz opened the game with a single down the 3rd base line. After a fly out, SS Brad Walsh hit a single to left to advance the runner to 2nd, CF Paul Mages struck out and LF Jack Mages hit a single to short center to load the bases. Then 3B Brian Winter bounced back to the pitcher for an easy throw to first to end the inning. What’s significant is that this was the first of 4 times that the Islanders left the bases loaded.

In the 5th, Jon Waltz took a pitch on the ribs to go to first with one out. 2B Josh Gasow lined a single to left center, and SS Brad Walsh looped a single down the 1B line to score Waltz from 2nd. Paul Mages then walked to load the bases with 1 out for the Islanders. Kurth then got Jack Mages to Pop Out to 1B Lukas Penovich, and the struck out Brian Winter looking to end the inning with BASES LOADED

In the 6th, 4 singles from Vaubel, 1B Ed Reichenbach, C Waltz, and 2B Gasow, scored only Vaubel and left the bases loaded. New Manager, Derek Nelson then moved Kurth to 1B, Penovich from 1B to 3B, and moved 3B Nate Swenson to the mound. (It looked like a National League Triple Switch) Nate then got the next two batters on a pop out and a grounder to short. LEAVING BASES LOADED again.

In the 7th, Islander LF Jack Mages hit the 2nd Homerun of the day to left field (these balls are expensive). Brian Winter singled to center. Vaubel flied out to right and then Ed Reichenbach hit a sharp grounder passed the mound, but SS T.J. Gulden made a nifty play to scoop the ball, step on second and throw out Reichenbach for the double play to end the short rally.

Then in the 8th, RF Zach Borchert led off with a walk. C Waltz popped out to the catcher, Gasow drew a walk, brad Walsh popped out to 2b Mike Cerjance deep way back into right field. Paul Mages walked to load the bases, and then Jack Mages – coming off the solo homerun the previous inning, grounded out short to first to end the inning. BASES LOADED FOR THE FOURTH TIME.

Great defensive opener for the Red Birds stranding 13 Islander runners on base, and 9 in scoring position.

Clutch Hitting, Clutch Pitching and Clutch Defense ... Three fundamental ingredients for winning baseball games.

Good Luck Red Birds the rest of the Season!
