LETTER FROM COACH RANDY DUNTON

Can Central and Southwest Virginia unify to serve our girls?

The need for an organization of professionals, parents and coaches to provide a competition based program for the young females of Central and Southwest Virginia to participate in has never seen the crossroads we currently stand at.

Our girls do not have the luxury of many counterparts who live within driving distance from a major indoor basketball facility with multiple courts.  Yet our girls must compete for the financial aid/scholarship opportunities with girls from this somewhat enhanced basketball development environments.

Yes we stand at a crossroads of unprecedented opportunity to serve the development of our girls.  There is a proud history of Roanoke Star teams that placed numerous girls into college programs.  As well as a number of Central and Southwest Virginia girls who have made positive impacts in helping their college programs succeed.  Team Virginia has completed two highly successful seasons of competition.  The Team Virginia “brand” has a positive perception in the world of competitive AAU and girls travel team basketball.

The first generation has passed the test now we need to replace those who have moved on with getting the “right” people on the bus.  Jim Collins in his national bestseller, Good to Great, challenges that organization need to ask “who first?” then what.

Can those of us involved in youth basketball development in Central and Southwest Virginia work together to improve the level of girl basketball player in our communities?  Can we come to the table with open honest dialogue and build trust?  Can we select those who will best serve the development of our girls through team play and then support them?  Can we build a program where girls are responsible for EARNING their position and playing time?  Can we have an organization that stresses fundamentals and sees the 13U, 14U, 15U and 16/17U as a progression of growth?

I hope that we can find new levels of support from high school coaches as we work to provide their players with off season opportunities to improve their skills and understanding.

There are some outstanding talents in our region needing to be trained, disciplined and taught.  There are some dedicated individuals standing on the sideline measuring where Team Virginia will be an organization that will produce their desired outcomes.  Free market competition can not be manipulated and that is the beauty.

Let’s unify and do something special for the girls.  It will make a big difference.

Ken Kesey writes, “There is going to times when we can’t wait for somebody.  Now, you are either on the bus or off the bus.”  I hope we can get all the right people on as the season approaches.  Time itself has placed the key in ignition and the bus is warming up.

Come along and we will all enjoy the journey.
