Mounties SHUT IT DOWN When It Counts!

Posted April 4, 2012

The Vancouver Mounties scored 4 runs in the 6th inning and then shut it down making a couple of great plays to extinguish a late Spurs threat and held on for a 7 - 6 victory in exhibition play over the Cloverdale Black Spurs.

The Mounties who played over 16 games at Cloverdale last year and feel like they're at home there, were thrown a curve when the shrewd general manager of the Spurs Pierre Robichaud scheduled this game at a neutral site at Tsawwassen's Winskill Park.

The Mounties struck first scoring 3 in the top of the 1st but Cloverdale responded with 2 in the bottom of the inning.  Cloverdale tied it up in the third and then scored 2 in the 4th to take a 5 - 3 lead.  The Mounties came back in the top of the 6th with a 4 run inning to give them a 7 - 5 lead. The Spurs would cut that 2 run deficit in half only to come up one run short with the tying run in scoring position.

The Mounties were sporadic defensively early in the contest but settled down and made some tough plays, including a diving play at 3rd, in the end to preserve the victory and stymie the Cloverdale attack which ended up leaving 10 men on base.  The Mounties out hit the Spurs by an 8 to 6 margin but the Spurs were more consistent on defence as the Mounties made 4 errors to the Spurs 1.

Even though it was a pre-season game, both teams once again played hard and you could certainly tell that the rivalry between the two teams is alive and well.  The Mounties will have a couple of days to enjoy the victory before they have to meet the Spurs again in the Tri Cities Icebreaker Tournament.  The Spurs will not have the pleasure of their a la carte batting order in that tournament as Tri City coach Downes will be monitoring all changes and will make sure that the Watkins/Thompson duo keeps things in proper order.
