Mounties Outlast Royals in Barn Burner!
Posted May 22, 2012
The Mounties opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st when lead off batter Hirakawa-Kao hit a 2 - 2 leadoff home run. The Mounties then picked up a couple of walks but squandered an opportunity when a runner got picked off and Ridge then turned a double play to get out of the inning.
Ridge came out swinging in the top of the 3rd and scored 3 runs to take a 3 - 1 lead. The Mounties answered right back and scored 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning and were now clinging to a 4 - 3 lead after 3 innings.
Ridge regained the lead in the 5th inning when they blasted a 3 run homerun to take a 6 - 4 lead. The Mounties did their best to come back in the bottom of the inning but the Ridge pitcher ended the inning with a strikeout leaving the two Mountie baserunners stranded.
With darkness looming and the threat of a shortened game the Mounties knew that the 6th inning may be their last chance and made the best of their opportunity scoring 4 in the inning to take an 8 - 6 lead.
To the credit of the umpires they knew that this game was far from over and they pushed on through the cloud darkend skies and started the 7th inning. Ridge scored a run and had the tying run on third with 2 outs. The Mounties now facing one of Ridge's homerun hitters decided to intentionally put him on with a walk. A controversial catcher's balk was called and the game was once again tied. The Mounties ended up getting the batter out and ended the inning setting up the last inning heroics.
It was a game where both offences dominated and both teams had many clutch at bats and hits. Thank goodness the Mounties were the home team tonight as it seemed like who ever batted last was going to win and that certainly came to fruition. The Mounties out hit the Royals by a 12 to 7 margin in the contest. Every time these two teams play it seems to come down to the last inning and the Mounties will be looking forward to next weekend when the fun starts all over again at Pitt Athletic Park as they meet the Royals for a double header.
