Rain stops Spurs and Mounties!
Posted May 30, 2012
The Spurs struck first scoring one in the top of the 1st inning. The Mounties answered back with 3 in the bottom of the 1st to take a 3 - 0 lead after the 1st inning. After holding Cloverdale scoreless in the 2nd the Mounties scored 4 more to take a 7 to 1 lead. A lead that some Bantam AAA league coaches think is safe and would chastise you for trying to keep scoring.
But the Mounties and any person who has been following the Bantam AAA League, knows that this is the year of the comeback and no lead is actually safe. Which is exactly what happened in the top of the 3rd when the first 6 Cloverdale batters reached base and scored. It was a crazy inning where Cloverdale had a mixture of some hard hits, some seeing eye hits and when they didn't hit it hard or find any holes they received a couple of fortuitous bounces from the cow pasture.
With the game tied Cloverdale now riding the momentum took the lead in the top of the 4th when Storrie hit a solo homerun. The Mounties were held scoreless for the 2nd inning in a row and the Spurs led by an 8 - 7 score after 4 complete innings.
With the Rain starting to come down harder both teams knew that their was a good chance that this one could be called early. The Mounties gained a bit of momentum when they managed to get Cloverdale out 1,2,3, in the top of the inning. Leading off in the bottom of the 5th Espig led off with a single. Stole 2nd base and Hemer sac bunted him over to 3rd base. With 2 out Espig scored when he stole home on a pass ball that tipped off the catchers glove.
The umpires to their credit allowed the teams to try and complete this great game but in the top of the 6th decided that it was getting a bit dangerous and called the game when it was apparent that the rain was affecting the abilities of the pitchers to grip the ball.
According to BC Minor rules tie games will only be accepted when games are called by the umpire due to darkness, rain or park curfew. So this one will go down in the books as an 8 - 8 tie.
