The Vancouver Mounties defeated the host Tri City Indians by a 10 - 2 score to end up with a 3 - 1 record to win the Ice Breaker Tournament for the 2nd year in a row. White Rock, Cloverdale, and Tri City each ended up 2 - 2 while Victoria Red sailed away with a 1 - 3 record.
The Mounties rode the stellar no hit pitching of starter Huntley and then relied on the solid arm of Ensing to bring it home. The Mounties started off a bit shakey in the 1st making 2 errors and giving up another un-earned run, but fought back and got out of the inning.
The Mounties took control in the bottom of the first when Quito had a strong 8 pitch leadoff at bat resulting in a single. After stealing 2nd Hogan followed up with a double so score him. Lindeman rising to the challange then Homered to the deepest part of the park straight away centre field to give the Mounties a 3 - 1 lead. Younan and Currie then delivered back to back singles, bringing up Huntley who reached on error scoring Younan and ending the inning due to the 4 run limit per inning rule.
The Mounties threatened over the next 3 innings but some untimely hitting and pre season base running gaffs resulted in their in ability to add to their lead. The defence was solid the rest of the way and the Mounties added 3 more in the bottom of the 5th to take a 7 - 1 lead after 5 innings.
Tri city answered when lead off hitter Dray welcomed Ensing to the league with an RBI Single in the top of the 6th inning. Ensing figured out things fast and shut the Indians down the rest of the way. The Mounties added 3 more in the bottom of the 6th inning when Younan for the 2nd time in the tournament hit a bases clearing triple. Final score Mounties 10 Tri Cities 2.
The Mounties bats were hot in the tournament producing 51 runs while giving up 15 . The Mounties now have 5 practices to clean up many factors of their game before their seasons opener against the expansion Burnaby Braves.
The Vancouver Mounties would like to thank the many volunteers from Tri Cities who worked hard all weekend to prepare the fields for the boys to play baseball.
