Beresford Walks by Lennox in a Defensive Game

If you read last week’s article about the season and Coach Sweeter’s outlook, you might have realized that Lennox is looking better than they have in the past. This time last year, Lennox took on Beresford and lost in 4 innings at a score of 16 to 0. This year Lennox showed they are twice as good as last year’s team.

Lennox started the game with Sophomore Braedon Wallenstein on the bump versus Senior A.J. Schmidt of Beresford. Lennox threatened in the first when Junior Jacob Lackas and Senior Ryan Raysby both reached on error to put runners on the corners with 1 out. However, Lennox could not find a way to push them in to score. Wallenstein threw an almost flawless first allowing only one man to reach base. Lennox went three up and three down and headed back to play defense. Wallenstein worked another flawless inning and into the third we went. With two outs in the third, Junior Tyler Leisinger stepped to the plate and worked the count. He finally found his pitch and hit a triple to the wall in right field. Raysby came up and hit a slow grounder to first in which he almost beat out, however he was out and the inning ended. Wallenstein’s walk that he allowed led to his removal at pitcher and Junior Nick Kayl’s appearance to the game. Nick struggled with 3 walks in the inning and allowed Beresford to score the opening run of the game. After 3, it was 1 to 0 Beresford.

In the 4th, Kayl opened with a double to left center field with no outs. Senior Grant Sweeter flew out and Junior Bailey Ludens struck out. Kayl stole third and Sophomore Marshall McLaren earned a walk to put runners on the corners. However, Sophomore Brock Stein would strike out when Senior Logan Busch came into pitch. In the fourth, Kayl struggled a little more and left the hill with runners on the corners and no outs. Grant Sweeter took over and gave up a hit, a walk and an error by the defense to lead to 4 runs and a 5 to 0 lead for Beresford. After a blank top of the 5th, Sweeter took the hill again on defense. After 13 pitches Lennox headed back to the dugout in their attempts to make a comeback. Three up and three down in the 6th lead to no runs. Busch’s RBI single in the bottom of the 6th made it 6 to 0 Beresford. Three more outs from Lennox’s offense lead to the final score of 6 to 0 Beresford.

Lennox took many positive points from the game as they had more hits than Beresford and less errors. Beresford had 3 hits to Lennox’s 4 and Beresford had 3 errors to Lennox’s 2. Coach Sweeter was very happy to see the defense and pitching do so well. He also liked how Lennox threated to score in 5 of the 7 innings.

The Orioles proved they are a much improved team from last year to this year and they would like to prove that with a win over Sioux Falls Christian on Monday. So come on out at 5:30 to watch your Orioles play their home opener and showcase their talents in a key district 3 East battle.
