Brownton Bests Cologne

After a full week off the Cologne Hollanders played the Brownton Bruins yesterday afternoon for the last game of the CRVL regular season. It was a must win for both teams. The winner would take the number 7 seed while the loser would be the number 8 seed for the upcoming first round of playoffs. Cologne's bats have been hot as of late, but Brownton's starting pitcher, Seth Schuette, threw a gem. Schuette held the Hollanders to no hits for 8-2/3 innings. Carter Clemensen was able to break the no-no with Cologne's only hit of the ballgame. Cologne got the start they needed from Alex Eichner, but the lack of offense gave Eichner no help. Eich was able to hold the Bruins scoreless for the first six innings of the ballgame. A lead off walk, sacrifice bunt, past ball, and sacrifice fly scored the first Bruins' run in the bottom of the seventh. Brownton added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth after an error, a walk, and a pair of hits scored two unearned runs. After running into a little trouble in the eighth, Eichner's day was done and Joey Lilya was able to get the last out.

It was an uncharacteristicly poor game by the Hollanders, but better to get that out of the system now than during playoffs. They boys will regroup and get ready for the first round. With the loss that means that Cologne has pulled the number eight seed. Through the jungle of possibilties that this season brought, the Hollanders ended up pulling the St Boni Saints for the best of three game series this week. Cologne will start the series by hosting the Saints Tuesday night (7/24) at Fritz Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30pm. Game two will be played at Watertown, and if needed, game three will be back at Cologne Sunday afternoon. We look forward to seeing everyone at the ballpark for some playoff baseball!
