Posted Apr 10/15 - Aaron "Hammer" Schultz Retires
Hammer Schultz has retired after 20 seasons with the Winsted Wildcats. He played and coached the Wildcats his entire town team career and was a great player and coach for the team. Hammer was a pivotal part of bringing the Wildcats to where they are today. As a coach he lead the Wildcats to 8 state tournaments with 3 final four finishes. He will still be helping behind the scenes...but will be sorely missed.

It's been a disgustingly long Winter....Words cannot describe how fed up with it I am. If any of you are parents with small children at home, I'm sure you've considered torching your home to rid your family of the embedded germs by now. I've considered it twice within the past 48 hours.

Posted Aug 23/10 - Wildcats Bounced Out Of Class B Tourney
The Winsted Wildcats debut in the Class B Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tourney didn't go as planned last night, as they lost 11-5 to the Burnsville Bobcats.

The Bobcats were recipients of 3 first inning runs, spotted to them by a couple of Wildcats errors (all with 2 outs). That pretty much was the storyline for the entire game. Burnsville scored almost all of their 11 runs with 2 outs, with half of them scoring as a result of costly errors. Defensively, both teams struggled, with each team notching 5 errors. The Wildcats simply made more costly errors.

Bright spots for the Wildcats....Joe "Joesus" Kley hit a massive solo home run...This ball may have landed in Franklin, MN. The quote from the dugout was: "Kley's majestic shot disappeared into the night sky" (quote compliments of Matt Klitzke/Dan Birkholz/Jeremy Schmidt). Marc Kohler and Cullen Schultz had key RBI singles that allowed the Wildcats to take the lead at 5-4, but that's where the Wildcats scoring ended.

The Burnsville Bobcats simply were the better hitting club last night. The Bobcats had a roster full of hitters. Their leadoff batter

Check this out...The Wildcats gettin' some ink on the Minnesota Baseball Association's website:

Wildcats Minnesota Baseball Association Story

Two things here...1) The article is false...I'm not on the team for the atmosphere, but for the adult beverage consumption that occurs after the game. And 2) Why is it that the 2 dudes that show up the least amount of times (Schlagel & myself), get the most "press?" I'll tell you why....It's because we're awesome. It's as simple as that.

Posted May 19/10 - Wildcats Throttle Hutch Huskies, 13-0
The Winsted Wildcats kicked off their 4 games in 5 days stretch by traveling to Hutch to take on the Huskies Wednesday night. Let's not beat around the bush here....It wasn't much of a game. The Wildcats absolutely dismantled the Huskies, by a score of 13-0 in 7 innings.

The Wildcats benefited immensely by numerous walks (combo platter of being hit by pitches and/or the garden variety, 4 pitch walks). Scoring 13 runs on only 6 Wildcats hits should tell the story on how poor the Huskies pitching was. And when the Huskies managed to get the ball over the plate, the Wildcats batters hit the ball HARD.

Throwing for the Wildcats Wednesday night was Josh "I Used To Play For Watertown" Anthony. Good old #7 pitched 6 shutout innings allowing only 2 Huskies hits. Anthony struggled a bit early with pitch consistency, but by the 4th inning, he got everything clicking and was throwing gas again.

The Wildcats also welcomed college baseball "sensation" Joe Kley back to the team for the 1st time this season. "Baby Joesus" returned to the Cats' from the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament in New Mexico, where he played for his beloved Winona State Warriors. Kley pitched a clean 7th inning to wrap up the "W" for the Wildcats tonight.

And now, "The Game Awards"...

  • The "Quote of the Night Award" goes to: Matt Wroge. Catcher Matt Wroge yelled "Pansy" from the dugout when cousin Gregg Kohler ducked out of the way from a fastball headed straight for "Gweggy's head. For those not in attendance, it was completely silent when Wroge yelled, so essentially every person who was in attendance at Veteran's Memorial Field tonight heard Wroge's callous remark.
  • The ""Timeout" of the Night Award" goes to Benny Machemehl. Benny "Machs" was issued a 2 inning "Silence" timeout in the 4th inning tonight for not being able to identify a very popular movie quote from the movie "Major League." Benny  was told he had to go sit by the water faucet for 2 innings and not talk to anyone during the penalty period. Machs then started writing questions down instead of talking, which resulted in the pen promptly being taken away from him. Coach Hammer also had to restrain other unnamed Wildcats players from attacking Machs since he disclosed that he had only seen the edited version of "Major League." After everything calmed down, Machs was advised that it was in his best interest to watch the unedited (real) version of "Major League" before Friday night's game so he would know what the rest of the team was referring to in the future. Machs, time to get your act together ;)
That's all I've got at this time. More to follow after the upcoming games.

Posted Sep 8/09 - Wildcats Lose To Hanska, 1-0; Season Ends With 4th Place Finish
Sorry for the delay, folks. It's taken me a couple of days to clear the "cobwebs." As Will Ferrell said in the movie "Old School," "It got crazy last night!" That pretty much sums up mine and a few other Wildcats evening at the Dodge House on Sunday.

On Sunday, September 6th, 2009, the Winsted Wildcats bid for a state championship came to an end.

The Wildcats lost 1-0 to the Hanska Lakers at Arlington. The Wildcats Tony Kley got his first start of the State Tourney, throwing 6 no-hit innings before allowing a freak Hanska run in the 7th inning. TK attempted to "kick save" a hard-hit Hanska grounder at the mound, only to have the ball carreen into shallow left field. The Hanska runner alertly took off from 2nd base and scored without a play at the plate. Who would have thought that would be the Wildcats would end their season?

Hanska pitcher Josh Hadley spread out the 8 Wildcats hits over the course of 9 solid innings. The Wildcats had a couple of opportunites with runners at 1st & 3rd with 1 out, only to hit into a line-drive double play. It was as frustrating of a game I have witnessed these past two seasons. We simply couldn't get things going. You need a little bit of luck to be success in these games. On Sunday, our luck simply ran out.

The loss meant the Winsted Wildcats wrapped up their 2nd, 4th place finish in the Class C State Tourney in the past 3 seasons. This means, for the 2010 season, the Wildcats will be moved up to Class B.

Game Awards....

"The Bike Athletic Supporter Award" goes to: Who else? Matt Wroge...Wroge took a hard liner to shortstop right in the "grapes." Wroge has prided himself the past two seasons by not wearing any "protection" while playing in the field. He calls it "pride," I call it "nuts" (no pun intended). It's safe to say, that the entire Wildcats team got the last laugh on this one.

The "Baseball Gods Were With Us Award" goes to: I'm not really sure, but think I have a good idea. In the bottom of the 9th, the Wildcats were down to their last out when draftee Josh Anthony was put in to pinch hit. Anthony hit a lazy fly ball to shallow centerfield that should have been an easy catch to end the game. Somehow, at the very last second, the ball drifted towards shallow right field and the center fielder dropped the ball, allowing Anthony to advance to 2nd base. Now I usually don't buy into this stuff, but I'm thinking that Kenny "Fossil" Norman may have had something to do with that ball being dropped. What do you think?

Posted Aug 3/09 - Wildcats win "seeding game" 3-1 over Glencoe
The Wildcats topped the Brewers Monday night, in a critical "seeding" game. I unfortunately, was not in attendance (again) but got updates periodically via cell phone.

I'm now going to attempt to write a recap on what I think occurred.

Tony "Don't Call Me Joe" Kley got the start and pitched 7 innings, striking out 48 batters. TK also stole 17 bases, all without sliding. Matt Wroge pitched a sparkling 8th inning, stiking out 6 batters, with Flu coming on in the 9th to close the door. Flu didn't waste anytime, retiring all 3 batters in order.

In regards to the hitting...Three runs scored so, one of the runs had to have come off of a Greggy Kohler solo shot to left field. The other two came via a sacrifice. I believe Jake "Gary's Boy" Prehn was involved in one of the sacrifices.

Now, to the Game Awards....

Quote of the game: has to go to either or both of the Kohler Brother's. One of them had to have grounded out with one of the brothers responding with, "my brother effing sucks."

Where's Waldo Award: unanimously goes to #28, Matt Klitzke. Good old #28 has missed about 80% of the season due to new baby, new early a** work hours, and again, back to the new baby. Sidenote - Blue Note sales are down 10% due to #28 being MIA.
