“Winning the district tournament on top of winning the regular season crown is really sweet for these girls,” East Robertson head coach Kevin Evans said. “We played as a team and I have a lot of confidence not only in our starters but in our deep bench which proved its value again and again in this tournament.”
Due to the recent floods, the tournament was forced to re-locate from Clarksville Academy to Houston County. As a result, all games were played in Erin.
Quarterfinals -- East Robertson 2, McEwen 1
In their opening game on Monday, the top-seeded Lady Indians faced fourth-seeded McEwen on a rainy and cold night.
The game was a classic pitchers’ duel and the outcome was in doubt up until the last out in the seventh inning.
Senior Kelsi Mason took the mound once again for East Robertson and delivered the latest in a seemingly endless string of solid performances.
Mason struck out nine Warriorette batters, scattered three hits and for the second consecutive game, did not walk a batter.
Semifinals -- East Robertson 8, Houston County 0
On a warm and muggy night on Tuesday, East Robertson dispatched the tournament’s host, the Lady Irish, with surgical precision.
The victory gave the Lady Indians a day off on Wednesday and propelled them into the finals on Thursday.
With the game scoreless in the third inning, East Robertson took advantage of the Houston County pitching staff, which had a hard time locating the strike zone.
Groves and Shari Chatman led off the inning with walks and Bella Zizzi loaded the bases with an infield single.
Scott and Erica Casey drew bases loaded walks to make the score 2-0 Indians.
Championship -- East Robertson 10, McEwen 0
The Lady Indians swept to the tournament title on a hot, sunny day by defeating McEwen for the second time in the tournament 10-0 in a game shortened to six innings by the run rule last Thursday.
East Robertson opened the scoring in the first inning when Illges, slap hitter, singled and stole second base.
Casey reached on an error and Buckman continued her torrid pace at the plate by scoring both runners with a double to left center field.
The Lady Indians blew the game open in the fourth inning with eight hits which produced seven runs. Leading 9-0 in the sixth inning, the Lady Indians wrapped things up when Casey was driven home by Shawna McAdams’ long sacrifice fly to left field.
