Lady Indians continue to win, now 6-0 in 10-A

The East Robertson High School Lady Indians softball squad improved its District 10-A record to 6-0 with two victories last

week. On Monday, they defeated Nashville Christian for the second time this season with a 10-3 road victory and then defeated

cross-county rival Jo Byrns 14-1 at home on Thursday.

Sandwiched in between the two district games, East Robertson lost a heartbreaking non-district contest at Sycamore 3-2 in ten innings. For the season, the Lady Indians overall record now stands at 14-5.

East Robertson 10, Nashville Christian 3

Against Nashville Christian, the Lady Indians found themselves in unfamiliar territory, trailing against a District opponent. East opened the game by taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the first as Erica Casey drove in Walton Illges with the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the first, Nashville Christian scored two unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the second, senior Shari Chatman launched her first career home run, a solo shot to left center field, tying the game at 2-2.

“I have to point out how proud I was of Shari Chatman for her first home run,” East Robertson head coach Kevin Evans said. “She has worked hard to improve her batting and has been very consistent of late for us at the plate.”

East Robertson would take the lead in the third on doubles by Casey and Brienna Buckman and an RBI single by Kaleigh Pearce. East put the game away with six runs in the fifth and six innings as Shawna McAdams, Kelsi Mason, Casey, Illges and Chatman all delivered run-scoring hits.

For the game, Chatman was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. On the mound, Mason, a senior, gave up one earned run and struck out nine while surrendering two walks and one hit over six innings. McAdams pitched the final inning for East, striking out the side in relief.

Sycamore 3, East Robertson 2 (10 innings)

In the Sycamore game, East Robertson trailed 2-0 heading to the sixth inning. Rachel Scott opened the sixth with a hit, Illges walked, and Bella Zizzi followed with an infield single.

Casey and Pearce delivered RBIs at the plate to tie the game at 2-2. Additional runs proved elusive for both teams and international-tiebreaker rules were instituted starting in the tenth inning, during which Sycamore managed to push across the winning run.

“I was particularly proud of how we played against Sycamore,” Evans said. “They have a very good team and we showed a lot of grit coming back in the sixth inning to tie the game.”

Zizzi led the Indian offense with two hits, one a triple to right center field but McAdams, a junior, was the story of the game. She pitched the full ten innings on a very warm afternoon, striking out six batters and only allowing three walks and five hits on the day.

East Robertson 14, Jo Byrns 1

The cozy confines of their home field in Cross Plains were a welcome sight for the Lady Indians on Thursday afternoon. They jumped on Jo Byrns with a run in the first and three more in the second.

After that, the outcome was never in doubt as East Robertson added six more runs in the third and four more in the fourth. Offensively, the Lady Indians were led by Kelsi Mason who was 2-for-3 with two long doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Erica Casey was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, Shari Chatman and Bella Zizzi were also 2-for-3 at the plate, and Walton Illges scored four runs.
