Posted Mar 28/10 - 2010 Draft Is Over

It was the first one ever to hit the league and it wasnt as good as we all thought it would be. It was short and sweet and it was rainy. But now 6 new players have joined the league and now the games will feature a 3 on 3 playing field.

First round pick belonged to the Sidewinders. They had the worst record in the leagues history and gave up the most runs ever in 2009. Captian Jake Dickerson Said earlier in the year that we need to improve on pitching. After the addition of Dischert pitching was the last thing they needed to fit the puzzle. Jake drafted a 2007 Cy Young winner Zach Gould. Zach Gould was released from the Thunder last year because he was unable to make games. In the past Gould was feared at the plate and on the mound. He is a member of the 100 homerun club and has one of the best records in pitching along with his very low ERA. If he can show up this season the Sidewinders made a very wise choice and probably the best choice in the draft. They have truely improved since last year on paper.

Second round pick was Corey Staples. Joey Kelly decided to go with another good fielder and decent hitter. In the spring training games Corey didnt do bad at the plate. He had a homerun and 4 RBI's. In the field he didnt make 1 single error. With Guiseppe Ferrara in the field and a guy like Cory in the field this thunder team looks to be set defensively. Also at the plate they look like a team who will generate alot of base hits and score some runs.

The Swamp Dragons owned the 3rd pick. Everyone thought they would draft a power hitter or even a pitcher. But they went after a player who hasnt even played a game. Brandon Eckert was chosen by captain Tyler Eckert. Another mishap with that roster. No one is sure how this guy plays and that doesnt serve any justice for a team that lacks power for runs and pitching to secure the tight games during the regular season. With this pick they did not improve at all. They look to be the worst team in the league and Tyler Eckerts leadership is starting to be questioned.

The Threshers had the 4th pick after finishing 3rd last season. Bernie Woodford and Bill Anderson both had solid seasons as rookies in 2009. They eneded up picking Alex Zimmerman hoping to finally gain an edge over the Mudcats. Zimmerman hit a solid .409 this spring and played some pretty good defense. He has some speed on the base paths and a good bat. Bernie Woodford was hoping to draft a number 2 pitcher but Alex will have to do. Bill Anderson will most likely be the number 2 pitcher and now a Threshers team that already racks up alot of hits should be getting a player that can do the same. They made out pretty well in the draft.

The Shorebirds had the 5th pick. There wasnt much left on the table but they made the disicion to draft a player that hasnt played a single game as well. Jason Bongard will be playing the 2010 season along with his neighbors Brian Romani and Zack Slavitsky. The Shorebirds looked stacked in pitching. Brian Romani will be the number 1 and Zack Slavitsky will be the number 2 guy. No one is really sure how well Jason will fit in but the team looks solid all the way around. Now that 1 out away from winning the title will be the other the way around in 2010.

Finally the Mudcats picked 6th. The champion Mudcats decided to go with Scott Denoro. He was the last player on the table in the 6th round but maybe not the worst. He did hit for a low average in the spring training games but did show off some good fielding and high speed. The mudcats didnt need to draft a pitcher after being solid in the 1, 2  rotation. Scott Denoro may not be rookie of the year material but he will find himself fitting in just fine with a powerful team that can ultimately win it all again in 2010.
