KATY — Down to their last out, the Katy Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the MacArthur Generals 4-3 in Thursday’s one-game Class 5A Region III quarterfinal playoff.

MacArthur had pushed across a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, pitcher Sarina Sanchez struck out the first two Katy batters, which gave her seven for the night.

But with the top of the order coming up, the Tigers still had a chance to make something happen. And Jessica Slater and Darian Blake did just that by getting consecutive hits.

That brought up senior shortstop Taran Tyler. The Texas A&M signee came through again, hitting a double to deep center field that scored Slater and Blake and won the game.

“My team did great,” Tyler said. “Jess has been struggling, but she found a way to come through. Darian wasn’t ready for it to be over, so she took it, all or nothing.

“I just had to hit the ball. (Slater and Blake) did their job, so I had to hit.”

A two-out error by Tyler allowed Linda Linares to score the go-ahead run for the Generals in the top half of the inning.

Tigers coach Kalum Haack was pleased that Tyler got a chance to redeem herself.

“I was hoping we could get to her,” Haack said. “I know how she is and the competitiveness she has inside. If she had a chance with the game on the line, I felt that good things were going to happen.”

Katy took a one-run lead twice, getting a solo homer by Sierra McConnell in the second and parlaying a couple of wild pitches in the third.

MacArthur came back both times, tying it with run-scoring hits from Selena Valdez in the third and Kristina Tover in the sixth.

MacArthur All District 2010 19-5A

This coming Monday there will be 32 teams left in the 2010, 5A Texas High School Softball Playoffs, and your Lady Generals are now one of them with their 2-1 victory last night over the undefeated 18-5A champs, Lady Tigers, of Springwoods. Sarina Sanchez pitched a 3 hitter through 7 innings with error free support by her comrades as Linda Linares highlighted the defense with a 3rd inning double play. Sanchez struck out 9 Lady Tigers and continues to make reporters marvel. Runs were scored by Linda Linares's lead off hit, moved to 2nd on a Mariah Garcia tagged up fly, and hit in by Selena Valdez in the 1st inning. The Ladies tacked on another run, after Kristina Tovar was "hit by a pitch", stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a errand throw and scored on a groundball RBI by Alyssa Perez in the top of 4th inning. Linda Linares, Tita Saldivar, and Mariah Garcia, all hit safely in the 5th inning but failed to score on some heroic Tiger "D". Springwoods's lone run came in the bottom of 7, after a double and sac fly which was nearly foiled by a strong throw from Mariah Garcia. Sanchez struckout the last batter to propel the Generals to Region 3's  next round. The ladies face the series winner between Katy and Bellaire, Katy leads that series 1 to 0, after their 2-0 win last night.
