DISTRICT 4B CHAMPS!

THANKS FOR ALL OF THE SUPPORT OF THE A's DURING THE 2013

YEAR. IT WAS A GREAT SUMMER OF BASEBALL IN COLMAN!!

Colman’s run ends in extra inning heartbreaker

The season, in which the Colman A’s proved to the league and to the State that they are no longer a team that can be overlooked, in just their eighth season of existence, has finally come to an end after falling to Dimock-Emery, 3-2, in a 13-inning thriller Monday night in the second round of the State ‘B’ Amateur tournament at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Colman threatened early. With runners on first and second and one out in the first inning, pick up player Rob Lind laced a single to right field. Paul Clark, the runner previously on second, raced towards home only to be thrown out at the plate.

Neither team had much of a chance to score for the next couple of innings as Colman starter John Roesler and Raptors starter Josh Engquist, were getting outs with ease.

That was, until the fifth inning, when Engquist decided to help himself. He took the first pitch he saw from Roesler in the fifth, a breaking ball, over the right field fence for a leadoff homerun to give the Raptors a 1-0 lead.

Engquist took that lead and ran with it, shutting down Colman for eight innings, but when he returned to the mound for the ninth, the A’s hitters finally woke up.

Bobby Clark started it off with a one out single and moved to third on a single to deep right center by Chris Meyer. Pinch runner Kyle Braun came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Derek Entringer to tie the game at 1-1 and force extra innings.

It didn’t take long for Dimock-Emery to get back on the board. After relief pitcher Deon Entringer got the lead off man to strike out, the Raptors’ third baseman, Phil Johnson, hit a hanging changeup on a full count over the right-centerfield fence for the Raptors second home run of the game to give them a 2-1 lead in the tenth.

But Colman was not ready to give up. Paul Clark led off the bottom of the tenth for Colman with a single. Billy Stitz squared up to bunt him to second but pulled the bat back and knocked a double off the left field fence to put runners at second and third with no outs.

The Raptors intentionally walked Lind to load the bases before bringing in a former All-American closer at Mount Marty, Jason Schmidt.

Schmidt quickly got Entringer to strike out but Adam Fritz answered the call with an infield single over the outstretched arm of Schmidt to score Clark.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Schmidt got Braun and Brandon Womack to strikeout back-to-back and sneak out of the jam.

The A’s had their best chance to win in the 11th. Derek and Deon Entringer both walked to start the inning followed by a single to left field by Paul Clark. As the ball reached the outfield, Derek Entringer rounded third and headed for home, only to be thrown out by a few steps. The Raptors got completely out of the jam in the next at bat when they got a force out at second and then got Deon Entringer caught up between home and third before tagging him out for the final out of the 11th.

Neither team scored in the 12th but Dimock-Emery got to Colman in the 13th. With a runner at third and two outs, Colman’s third pitcher of the night, Brandon Womack, fired a breaking ball low and away that scooted past catcher Paul Clark, allowing the Raptors to plate the go-ahead run.

Colman was unable to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, falling 3-2 and putting an end to their season.

Seven of the A’s 11 hits came from the top three hitters in the order, Deon Entringer went 2-6, Paul Clark finished 2-5 with a run scored and Stitz finished 3-6 with a double.

The three A’s pitchers combined to allow three runs on 13 hits, eight walks and eight strikeouts.

Alexandria was crowned State ‘B’ Champions Sunday afternoon after defeating Winner-Colome on a walk-off single by Tyson Gau in the bottom of the ninth inning, 4-3, Gau also earned the win on the mound, pitching all nine innings for the Angels. Alexandria had previously beaten Flandreau and defending State Champions, Parkston, to get to the title game.

Although their season did not end in a State Championship, the A’s had their best season to date. Winning their first District 4B championship, picking up their first win in a State Tournament, and winning 11 of their last 13 games, including two five game win streaks, on their way to their first season with an above .500 record at 15-12.

On a related note, it was Manager Bill Clark’s 40th year as a baseball coach in Moody County. As one of the longest tenured coaches in the entire State, Clark has helped take the A’s from perennial cellar dwellers to a team ranked ninth in the State rankings at the end of the season.

Colman falls to Dimock/Emery in 13, ends season

Jon Wulf Reporting

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Colman A’s gave it all they had on Monday night at the State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Sioux Falls, but came up short. After 3 hours and 23 minutes of baseball, Colman fell to Dimock/Emery 3-2 in 13 innings.

Both teams were kept in check by the starting pitchers early in the game, but it was Dimock/Emery who was able to strike first. In the fifth inning with no score, Josh Engquist launched a solo home run to right field, putting the Raptors up 1-0. The 1-0 lead remained intact until the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out in the ninth, Colman was able to get on the scoreboard as Derek Entringer delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Bobby Clark to tie the game at one and send it to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Dimock/Emery quickly took the lead back, when Phil Johnson hit a solo home run to right field, giving the Raptors a 2-1 advantage. Colman again was able to come back in the 10th. With the bases loaded, Adam Fritz hit a chopper and reached on an infield single, scoring Paul Clark to tie the game at two.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the 11th inning, including Colman who had Derek Entringer, the winning run, thrown out at the plate. In the 13th, with the bases loaded, Dimock/Emery retook the lead when Brandon Womack threw a wild pitch, scoring Sam Pischke, putting the Raptors up 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Jason Schmidt struck out Deon Entringer on a check swing to end the ballgame and advance Dimock/Emery to the next round.
Billy Stitz was 3-for-6 with a double in the game for Colman, while Deon Entringer went 2-for-5. Phil Johnson had a 3-for-4 night for Dimock/Emery with a home run, an RBI and three walks. Josh Engquist threw nine innings for the Raptors, striking out eight.

Colman was eliminated with the loss, finishing the season at 15-12, marking the first time they have ever finished above .500. Dimock/Emery advances to face Dell Rapids PBR on Thursday at 8 p.m.

A’s take District Crown after thriller with PBR

After a 3-6 start to their season, the now 14-11 Colman A’s are District 4B Champions for the first time in the team’s history after an 8-7 extra-inning win over Dell Rapids PBR Saturday night.

Colman started off the game with the hot bat, knocking in four runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Aaron Entringer, Bobby Clark, and Jake Otkin. The A’s sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning, collecting five hits.

Colman tallied two more runs in the second inning. Paul Clark reached base on a one out single and scored on the next pitch after Billy Stitz tripled to right center. Entringer knocked in Stitz on a sacrifice fly, his second RBI of the game, giving Colman a huge, 6-0, lead after two innings.

PBR, who trailed Salem, 7-1, in their game to get to the championship before defeating them handily, started storming back. They scored a lone run in the third inning to make it 6-1 and then five runs in the sixth off starter John Roesler and reliever Deon Entringer to tie the game at six runs apiece.

That is what the score would remain until the 10th inning when PBR would take their first lead of the game. Dells led off the inning with a single, and quickly sacrificed him over to second base. Entringer then got Legion player, Westan Hanson to strikeout before the PBR leadoff man blooped a hit in front of Keenan Soyland in right field, scoring the go ahead run.

Things were not looking good for Colman, who hadn’t scored a run since the second inning, but pinch-hitter Austin Ross created a spark when he was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the 10th. Ross was bunted to second base by Derek Entringer and with two outs - and two strikes – with the District Championship on the line, Chris Meyer lined a single over the head of Hanson knocking in Ross to tie the game.

To the 11th inning it went, and after Deon Entringer set the Dells hitters down in order in his fifth inning of relief, the A’s stepped to the plate. Entringer led off the inning with a hit by pitch to reach first base, followed by a single from Stitz to left center that pushed Entringer to second.

On the very next pitch, Aaron Entringer knocked a ball to right field, scoring Deon Entringer from second base and giving the A’s the 8-7 victory and their first District Championship in team history.

Deon Entringer picked up his second win of the tournament to go along with his game winning run – stats that were good enough to earn him the District 4B Playoffs Most Valuable Player award.

Stitz finished the game a homerun short of the cycle, going 3-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. Aaron Entringer knocked in three runs in his two hit performance, while Paul Clark scored two runs on his two hits.

The A’s got to the Championship game by defeating second seeded Canova, 10-4, last Tuesday night. Paul Clark picked up the win on the mound, with Brandon Womack picking up his first save of the year, pitching the final three innings.

Stitz was 3-4 with two walks and three RBI on the game, while Aaron Entringer knocked in two runs on two hits.

The A’s will take on the Lennox Reds this Friday at 1:00 PM in the opening round of the State Tournament at Sioux Falls Stadium. If they A’s manage to win, they will play Monday night at 8:00 PM, also at the Birdcage, against the winner of Garretson and Dimock/Emery.

A’s take down Lennox in State opener

Three runs in the first inning proved to be enough for the Colman A’s amateur baseball team to defeat the Lennox Reds, 12-2, in the opening round of the Amateur State Tournament in Sioux Falls Friday afternoon. The A’s tacked on nine more runs before the game was over to earn the mercy rule victory.

Deon Entringer led the first inning off with a walk and scored two batters later on a Billy Stitz triple to right center. Stitz came around to score a few pitches later when pick up player, Rob Lind of Humboldt Hartford, roped a single to center field to make it 2-0. A series of bad plays by Lennox and a single by Adam Fritz allowed Lind to score for the A’s third and final run of the inning.

Lennox put an unearned run on the board in the top of the third inning off Colman starter Brandon Womack to bring the deficit to just two at 3-1.

Colman (15-11) responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to bring their lead back to three runs, 4-1, after three innings of play.

Lennox scratched across another run off Womack in the top of the fifth but Colman responded with five runs on six hits including Stitz’s second triple of the game and back to back doubles off the wall by Deon and Derek Entringer to bring the score to 9-2 after five innings.

Colman put the game away in the sixth with three more runs. Stitz led off with a single to right field. Lind followed with a walk and Aaron Entringer would follow with a RBI fielder’s choice to score Stitz.

Lind came around to score on an Adam Fritz single, who then scored on a series of passed balls to make it 12-2 after six innings.

Womack put a bow on it in the seventh; setting the Reds down in order to pick up the A’s first State tournament win since they started their program back up in 2005.

Lind paced the A’s going 3-3 with a walk, two RBIs and four runs scored. Stitz finished 3-4 with two triples, one RBI and three runs scored. Deon Entringer finished 2-2 with two walks, while Fritz finished 2-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Womack went the distance for Colman, allowing just four hits and striking out three to earn his sixth win of the year.

Colman played their second game of the State tourney Monday night at 8:00 PM against the Dimock-Emery Raptors, if they won that game, they play this Thursday night at 8 p.m. against the winner of the Salem vs. Dell Rapids PBR game.

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. -- The Colman A’s needed some extra innings to clinch their first-ever District 4B Championship on Saturday night in Dell Rapids. The A’s defeated Dell Rapids PBR 8-7 on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The Colman offense had a strong showing early in the game, plating four runs in the first inning. The A’s were helped by two PBR errors, but pounded out four hits, including RBI singles from Aaron Entringer and Jake Otkin to lead 4-0. Colman continued the hot hitting in the second inning, chasing PBR starter Kevin Krull from the game. With one out, and a man on base, Billy Stitz delivered a triple to score Paul Clark and make it 5-0. A sacrifice fly from Aaron Entringer pushed Colman’s lead to 6-0 after two innings. Krull was replaced on the mound by Dale Solberg, who shut down the Colman offense and allowed PBR to mount a comeback.

After picking up a run in the third off of an RBI double from Dan Conrad, PBR scored five runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. 10 men came to the plate in the inning, as PBR picked up RBI singles from Scott Lebrun and Travis Peters, and took advantage of Colman errors, to tie the game at six. The game went into the 10th inning, where Dell Rapids PBR took their first lead of the game when Travis Peters singled to right, scoring Blake Harms to make it 7-6. Colman Tops Canova In Semi's; PBR Over Salem

Dell Rapids PBR and the Colman A’s will meet in the District 4B championship game, after both teams won last night at Rikeman Field in Dell Rapids.

In the first semi-final game the Salem Cubs grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st against PBR, thanks to a 3 RBI triple from Brian Duxbury. But Dell Rapids PBR slowly chipped away at that lead, keeping the game close until the sixth inning. In the sixth the PBR offence exploded for 7 runs on 4 hits to take the lead for good. They would go on to win 15-7.

Salem was lead by Dan Conrad who was 3-4 with 3 runs scored. Weston Hanson went 4-4 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Conrad also got the win, throwing 6 plus innings in relief, and allowing just 1 run on 4 hits. Brian Duxbury had a great night in the loss, he finished with a home run, a triple, and 5 RBI.

In game two it was Canova grabbing the first inning lead, thanks to a three run homerun by Devin Alfson. But Colman would tie the game in 2nd, and then add runs in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th innings in a 10-4 win over Canova.

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. -- Although they had to wait 75 years between State Tournament appearances before earning one in 2012, the Colman amateur baseball team will not have a wait this year. The A’s clinched a spot in the 2013 State Amateur Baseball tournament with an 8-5 victory over Lennox at the District 4B Tournament on Sunday.

Colman fell behind in the top of the first, when Mark Houck delivered an RBI single for Lennox to lead 1-0. The A’s answered in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Bully Stitz to tie the game at one. Both teams remained off of the scoreboard until the fifth. Justin Vietor hit a two-RBI single to right, putting Lennox up 3-1. Colman, however, answered again with a three-run sixth inning with RBI hits from Stitz, Aaron Entringer and Bobby Clark, giving the A’s their first lead at 4-3. Colman added four more runs over the next two innings, holding an 8-3 advantage going into the ninth. Lennox scored two in the ninth and had the bases loaded, but Colman turned a double play to end the game.

Billy Stitz went 2-for-4 in the game for Colman with a triple and two runs batted in, while Aaron Entringer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Justin Vietor was 1-for-4 with two RBIs for Lennox.

Colman clinched a berth in the State Amateur Baseball Tournament with the win and advanced to the semi-finals of the District 4B Amateur Baseball Tournament. The third-seeded A’s will face No. 2 seed Canova, Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Lennox will take on the winner of the Harrisburg/Canistota game on Friday at 8:00. A’s get #3 Seed in District Playoffs

The A’s did not have the best of weeks on the baseball field but with some help they were able to secure the third slot in this weekend’s District Tournament in Dell Rapids.

Canova 7 – Colman 3

Five runs in the fourth inning of Colman starter, John Roelser, gave Canova all the runs they needed to take down the Colman Amateur baseball team last Thursday night to put an end to the A’s five game win streak.

The Gang put up a single run in the second inning after a leadoff walk came around to score on sacrifice fly by Curt Carlson.

Five more runs in the fourth, capped by a three run homerun by Carlson over the left field fence gave The Gang a 6-0 lead.

Colman answered with three runs in sixth inning after a two run single by Aaron Entringer scored Derek Entringer and Paul Clark. Stitz would later come around to score on a RBI ground out by Bobby Clark to bring the score to 6-3.

Canova added a single run in the eighth to bring the score to its final of 7-3.

The A’s managed only five hits on the night, two by Paul Clark (2-3), two by Stitz (2-3) and one by Entringer (1-4), while striking out a total of 14 times against Canova pitchers Lincoln Gassman and Jared Donahue.

Colman 2 – Salem 1

Hitting came at a premium for the A’s again on Sunday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader; luckily for the A’s their two runs on five hits were just enough to squeak past Salem, 2-1, and earn their ninth league victory of the season

Salem plated a run in the second inning after a leadoff walk came around to score on sacrifice fly, but that was all Salem could manage on the night thanks to a stellar pitching performance by A’s starter Brandon Womack.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the fourth, Stitz led off with a solo homerun over the right center field fence to tie the game at one run apiece.

The A’s took the lead the following inning; Kyle Braun led off with a hit, breaking a streak of 11 straight games without a hit for Braun. He was then bunted over by Derek Entringer and would come around to score on a rope single by Womack that gave the A’s the lead, 2-1.

After carrying the team both offensively and on the mound for the first five innings, Womack went back out and pitched a perfect final two innings of the scheduled seven-inning game to pickup the win for Colman.

The win turned out to be a significant one, as Flandreau would lose later in the day, clinching the third seed for the A’s in the upcoming District Playoffs.

Five A’s picked up hits; Deon Entringer, Adam Fritz, Braun, and Womack all picked up singles while Stitz collected the homerun.

Womack finished with seven innings pitched, allowing just one run on four hits to improve his season record to 5-1.

Dell Rapids PBR 16 – Colman 3

Things got ugly for the A’s in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader versus Dell Rapids PBR with Dells scoring 12 runs in the final two innings to blow out the A’s.

Colman was already trailing 3-0 in the fifth when they scratched across their first run thanks to a bases loaded balk with Stitz at the plate that scored Keenan Soyland.

After giving that run right back in the top of the sixth inning to make it 4-1 in favor of PBR, the A’s responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Fritz led off the inning with bunt single and come around to score on a three base error by Dells on the next at-bat from Bobby Clark. Clark then scored on another infield single, this time by Keenan Soyland.

It did not stay 4-3 for very long as PBR would plate 12 runs over the next two innings to end the game via the mercy rule, 16-3.

Colman mustered only six hits, led by a 2-2 performance from Stitz, who also collected two walks. Fritz, Chris Meyer, Soyland, and John Roesler eached picked up a single for the A’s to round out their hitting.

The A’s faced off with Salem again Monday night (after publication). The game meant nothing to the A’s in terms of what seed they would have, but it did mean a lot in terms of who they would play in their first game of Districts. No matter who their opponent, the A’s will play at 5:00 p.m. Sunday night in Dells for the first round of Districts.

A’s extend win streak to five

The A’s coninue to roll as they picked up two more wins on the week to extend their winnings streak to five games and take over sole possesion of third place in the Corn Belt League Standings.

Colman 7 – PBR 1

The A’s got their week started off right by taking down Dell Rapids PBR, 7-1, to take sole possession of third place in the Corn Belt League standings.

Colman got on the board right away thanks to an RBI ground out by Aaron Entringer that gave the A’s the 1-0 lead.

PBR responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning off Colman starter, Deon Entringer, but that was all he would surrender the rest of the game.

Colman took the lead for good in the third inning after a two RBI single by Billy Stitz scored John Roesler and Austin Ross. Aaron Entringer would immediately follow with and RBI of his own that scored Paul Clark.

The A’s added three more runs in the seventh off a two RBI single by Aaron Entringer and a throwing error on the play scored the third run.

Eight of the nine batters in the A’s lineup collected hits on the night, including four different A’s collecting multiple hits.

Deon Entringer went all nine innings giving up one run on five hits and striking out nine PBR batters.

Colman 2 – Harrisburg 1

A two run third inning was all the Colman A’s needed Thursday night to take down Harrisburg, 2-1, in Corn Belt League action.

Colman threatened in the first with back-to-back singles by Paul Clark and Billy Stitz, but they couldn’t push a run across.

Harrisburg took advantage of a two-out error in the bottom of the second inning by A’s third baseman Chris Meyer, which was followed by two straight singles that plated Harrisburg’s only run.

Colman didn’t back down, scoring two runs in the very next inning. Deon Entringer led off with a single and would later score on an RBI single by Stitz. Clark, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning, came around to score on another error by Harrisburg to give the A’s the lead for good, 2-1.

A’s hurler Brandon Womack shut Harrisburg down the rest of the game, allowing just seven hits and striking out five.

Deon Entringer was 3-4 for the A’s while Stitz finished 2-4 with two RBI to lead the A’s offense.

The win was their fifth straight win of the season, and is the longest win streak in the history of the Colman A’s.

The A’s double header against Salem scheduled for last Sunday was washed out due to rain. Their next scheduled game is tomorrow in Canova.

Roesler’s gem leads A’s to third straight win

Two runs in the bottom half of the first inning was all the Colman A’s needed on Tuesday night to take down Lennox, 7-1, for their third straight win in Cornbelt League action at the Field of Dreams in Colman.

Deon Entringer led off the first inning for the A’s with a check swing single that found the grass in short right field. After being bunted over to second base by Paul Clark, Entringer scored on a Billy Stitz double to left center. Stitz then came around to score a few pitches later on another double to left center, this time off the bat of Aaron Entringer.

The two first inning runs were all the A’s needed thanks to a brilliant pitching performance by John Roesler.

Roesler set down the first 15 batters he faced in order before a Lennox hitter finally reached on an arrant throw by Colman third baseman Kyle Entringer. Lennox managed to load the bases in that inning but the lefty worked his magic and got out of the frame unscathed.

Colman added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A double steal in the fourth inning scored Adam Fritz and a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Stitz scored Austin Ross in the fifth.

Roesler continued to dice up the Lennox offense in the later innings of last Tuesday’s game. He was helped by three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the last two coming off a two RBI single up the middle by Deon Entringer to bring the Colman lead to 7-0.

Lennox was able to get on the board in the top of ninth. After the leadoff man grounded out, A’s right fielder, Keenan Soyland, dropped a fly ball to give Lennox some life. The next batter singled before Roesler walked a man to load the bases.

The next hitter drove a fastball deep to right centerfield that Soyland was able to get under but it was deep enough to score Lennox’s lone run of the game.

Roesler’s final line was nearly flawless, going nine innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits, six strikeouts and two walks.

Deon Entringer (3-5 with a run and two RBI) and Aaron Entringer (3-4 with an RBI) both continued their hot hitting for the A’s, while Fritz (1-3 with two runs scored), Stitz (1-2 with a run and two RBI), Ross (1-4 with two runs scored), and Soyland (1-3) rounded out the A’s offense.

Colman (6-6) leapfrogged Lennox (6-7) for the fourth spot in the Cornbelt League standings with the win. The A’s traveled to Dell Rapids last night to take on PBR, and will head to Harrisburg tomorrow as well as play a double-header at Salem on Sunday.

A’s complete regular season sweep of Cardinals

A five run second inning by the A’s propelled the Colman Amateur baseball team to their second straight win over cross county rival, Flandreau, on Sunday night, 11-1, in seven innings to complete the season sweep after a 3-0 win back on June 4th.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the first inning with their lone run on a double steal by Rick Weber and Beau Severtson that scored the latter of the two to give the Cardinals the early lead, 1-0.

Colman went down in order in the bottom of the first inning off Flandreau starter Luke Gassman, but he didn’t have such luck in the second inning.

Aaron Entringer led off the second with the A’s first hit but was later picked off first base by catcher Brooks Cross. The running blunder didn’t hinder Colman as the next five batters reached base, which included an error that tied the game and a two RBI single by John Roesler that gave the A’s the lead, 3-1.

After a strikeout of Jake Otkin, the A’s plated two more runs thanks to back to back RBI singles by Deon Entringer and Paul Clark that gave the A’s a 5-1 lead.

The A’s tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Adam Fritz that scored Aaron Entringer and another two RBI single by Roesler that plated Fritz and Keenan Soyland.

The score remained 8-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Roesler led off the inning with his third hit of the night, this time a double to left center field. He later came around to score on single up the middle by Billy Stitz. Stitz and Paul Clark scored on the next pitch when Aaron Entringer drove a double to wall to give the A’s a ten run lead, 11-1.

The Cardinals tried to keep the game going in the top of the seventh with back to back walks to Drew Weber and Buck Bauske, but Deon Entringer was able to strike out Gassman and get Cross to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game via the mercy rule.

Entringer went all seven innings on the mound for Colman, allowing just one run on five hits, walking four and striking out eight Cardinal batters.

Gassman also pitched a complete game, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 13 hits, while walking four and striking out four A’s batters.

Roesler paced the A’s, going 3-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Deon and Aaron Entringer each went 3-4. Fritz collected two hits in his three at bats, scoring two runs and knocking in one.

Zach Weber was the only Cardinal to collect multiple hits on the night going 2-3 for Flandreau. Rick Weber, Drew Weber, and Nic Behrens each had a single a piece to round out the Cardinal’s offense.

The win improves Colman’s league record to 5-6, while the loss drops Flandreau to 5-8 in Cornbelt League action. Each team played a game last night before going on a week break for the Independence Day holiday.

Losing streak ends against Canistota

The Colman A’s took part in three games over the past week as they were looking to end a bit of a losing streak that has seen them drop a few places in the Cornbelt League standings. They were unable to do so against the league’s top team in Madison on Tuesday but an offensive outburst versus Canistota put an end to the streak that saw the A’s lose five of their last six games.

Madison 7 – Colman 2

The A’s got on the board just three batters into the game and held that lead for seven full innings before the Madison Broncos got to Colman’s pitching staff for seven runs in the eighth.

Billy Stitz led off the game for Colman with a double to right center and was sacrificed over by Paul Clark before scoring on a Jake Otkin ground out to the shortstop to give the A’s the early, 1-0, lead.

From there until the eighth inning, it was the Paul Clark Show. Clark didn’t allow a single hit by the Broncos through the first four innings before allowing a single in the fifth and a double in the sixth.

After a perfect seventh inning on the mound, Clark went back out for the eighth inning, a decision that proved to be costly for the A’s.

Madison’s leadoff man reached on an error and after Clark got the next man to fly out, the Broncos went on a run. Clark allowed back-to-back singles that tied the game and forced Manager Bill Clark to make a move to the bullpen for, lefty, John Roesler.

The Broncs showed no mercy to Roesler, picking up four straight RBI singles. When the inning was all over, Madison had taken a 7-1 lead.

Colman did tack on a run in the ninth thanks to Adam Fritz who walked and came around to score on a series of passed balls.

Clark finished the game with the loss, tossing seven-and-a-third innings of four hit baseball, striking out two and allowing three runs (two earned).

Stitz finished the game 2-4 with two doubles and a walk for the A’s while singles by Kyle Entringer and Keenan Soyland accounted for the A’s only other two hits.

Colman 15 – Canistota 4

Thursday’s game in Montrose against Canistota marked the end of the A’s three game losing streak that dates back to the last time they faced Canistota on June 13th.

It was not a pretty game for the home team as the A’s managed to pick up 14 hits and 11 walks to earn their 15-3, mercy-rule, victory.

The A’s took the lead in the second inning thanks to three runs by the bottom three hitters in the lineup and they didn’t look back from there. They picked up a single run in the third, five runs in the fifth, four more in the sixth and ended the game with two runs in the seventh.

Canistota scored one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth off of Colman’s starting pitcher, Brandon Womack. Womack earned his third win of the season, going all seven innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, and striking out 10 Canistota batters.

At the plate, Kyle Entringer and Adam Fritz led the Colman offense by each going 2-3 on the night with two walks apiece. Fritz accounted for four of Colman’s runs scored, while Entringer was plated three times.

Keenan Soyland and Brandon Womack each picked up three RBIs a piece for the A’s. Deon Entringer (2-5 with a walk), Paul Clark (2-6), Billy Stitz (2-3 with three walks), and Womack (2-5) all picked up multiple hits for the A’s.

The A’s finished their week off with a home game versus Flandreau on Sunday. Check the paper for an additional article on the game.

A’s pick up one win over three game stretch

The Colman A’s picked up a league win on Thursday over Canistota 13-2, sandwiched by an 8-5 loss Tuesday to Canova and 11-2 loss on Sunday to Madison.

Canova 8 – Colman 5

A sixth inning homerun by Canova’s shortstop off Colman’s John Roesler put The Gang up 7-5 before they added an insurance run later in the inning to take down the Colman A’s 8-5 in Cornbelt league action.

Canova plated four runs in the first inning off Roesler in large part because of two Colman errors. The A’s narrowed the gap by one run in the bottom half of the first when leadoff man Deon Entringer singled, moved to second on a bunt by Paul Clark, moved to third on a groundball by Billy Stitz and scored on a single by Aaron Entringer.

The A’s tied the game in the fourth after Colman loaded the bases thanks to three straight singles by Entringer, Clark, and Stitz. All three runs scored on a Jake Otkin triple to make the score 4-4.

The A’s continued to hit as they took the lead in the fifth when Deon Entringer scored on a Stitz triple to make it 5-4.

But the lead didn’t last long, as Canova belted a three run blast in the top half of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Deon Entringer went 2-5 with three runs scored, while Clark went 2-4 and Stitz went 3-4.

Colman 13 – Canistota 2

It didn’t take long for the A’s to take a lead over league foe Canistota on Thursday, plating four runs in the first inning en route to picking up their third league victory, 13-2.

Colman’s starter, Deon Entringer, threw eight shutout innings of two hit baseball before Andy Kapperman of Canistota took him deep with a runner on in the ninth for their only two runs.

Aaron Entringer led Colman at the plate going 3-3 with two runs scored, while Stitz went 2-2 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Madison 11 – Colman 2

Things got off to a rough start for Colman in the first inning as Madison scored six runs on just four hits and included four walks by A’s starting pitcher Derek Entringer.

Madison starter Ray Wagner essentially shut down the Colman offense for the first five innings before the A’s were able to avoid the ten-run rule in the sixth after Stitz singled and came around to score on an Aaron Entringer single later in the inning.

After Madison tacked on one more run in the eighth, the A’s were looking the mercy rule right in the eye again but Stitz doubled and later scored on a passed ball to give the A’s their second run.

The A’s couldn’t get anything together in the ninth and fell to the undefeated Madison Broncos, 11-2.

John Roesler pitched six and a third innings giving up just one run in relief for the A’s. Stitz was 2-3 with both runs scored while Entringer went 1-2 with the lone RBI. The bottom six batters for the A’s combined to go 0-19 in the game.

The games brought the A’s record to 3-4 in the Cornbelt league and 4-7 overall.

The A’s face off with Volga on Friday as well as Humboldt on Sunday. Both games are on the road for the A’s.

John Roesler sends a fastball towards home Sunday evening. Roesler pitched six and a third innings in relief of Colman starter Derek Entringer. Roesler gave up just one run in the A’s 11-2 loss to the league’s top team, Madison.

A’s top Cardinals Fall to Harrisburg

The Colman A’s were able to best the Flandreau Cardinals 3-0 in a battle of area Amateur baseball teams last Tuesday night at the City Park in Flandreau. The A’s proceeded to drop their contest versus Harrisburg at home on Thursday, while the Cardinals took an extra-inning win from Lennox on Thursday.

Colman 3 – Flandreau 0

The A’s scored some early runs off starting pitcher Bret Severtson and played some stellar defense to hold to the Cardinals scoreless to pick up the win.

The A’s led off the game with back-to-back hits by Deon Entringer and Paul Clark, but were unable to make anything of it.

After a scoreless bottom of the first for Flandreau, the A’s got on the board. Kyle Braun hit a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch by Severtson. Braun came into to score two batters later on a two out single by Brandon Womack to give the A’s the 1-0 lead. Womack came in to score on a Derek Entringer double to extend their lead to 2-0 after two innings.

That was all they needed and more to defeat the Cardinals thanks to a shut down pitching performance by Womack. Allowing just three hits in the entire game (two doubles from Beau Severtson and one weak single by Nic Behrens) and with help from his defense, Womack was able to shutout the Cardinals.

The A’s did add an insurance run in the ninth off reliever Zach Weber thanks to an RBI single by Kyle Entringer that plated Paul Clark to make it 3-0.

Deon Entringer and Braun each joined Beau Severtson with two hits apiece, going 2-4 on the night.

Harrisburg 7 – Colman 0

Colman couldn’t find an answer to Harrisburg’s starting pitcher Thursday night as the Woodies pounded out seven runs to take the victory.

The A’s got a descent performance from starting pitcher Derek Entringer who gave up four runs in the first eight innings before the Woodies piled on in the ninth.

Offensively, the A’s were only able to put up five hits and only sent more than the minimum to the plate four times.

The A’s fall to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Corn Belt League games. They will face off with Canistota at home on Tuesday and a double header with Madison at home on Sunday.

Errors plague A's in marathon loss

A sloppy game by the Colman A’s infield allowed Lennox “The Only” to get back in the game late and eventually win, 5-4, in a 14 inning marathon contest between the two Corn Belt league teams Sunday night in Lennox.

The three and half hour game started with A’s leadoff man Deon Entringer ripping a triple to left center and eventually scoring on a passed ball to give the A’s an early 1-0 lead.

Lennox quickly responded in the bottom of the first with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1 and took the lead in the second after a lead off walk would eventually come around to score, giving Lennox an early 2-1 lead.

The A’s took the lead right back in the third inning with two runs on just two hits, thanks to some accuracy issues with Lennox’s starting pitcher.

Colman tacked on one their final run of the game in the fourth thanks to three straight two-out singles, starting with Derek Entringer who moved to second on a single by Bob Clark and scored on a single by Deon Entringer.

Paul Clark got in a zone on the mound for Colman after the two early runs, scattering just four hits over the next four innings but Lennox got to him in the eighth.

Clark walked the leadoff man who was followed up by a double before Colman Skipper, Bill Clark, made the move to the bullpen for Deon Entringer. The first batter Entringer faced hit a routine ground ball to the shortstop who made a poor throw to first, allowing two runs to score and tie the game at four runs a piece.

Neither team was able to score in the ninth, forcing extra innings between the two league squads.

Questionable umpiring plagued both teams throughout the entire game but it only seemed to get worse as the game went on, forcing rallies by both teams to end abruptly.

No rally was needed for Lennox in the 14th inning as the leadoff man reached on yet another A’s error. Lennox would eventually work the bases loaded before reliever John Roesler hit the Lennox batter to knock in the winning run.

Paul Clark pitched seven plus innings allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits while picking up five strikeouts. Entringer pitched three innings, and Roesler finished the game off picking up the loss.

Deon Entringer, Bob Clark and Adam Fritz each ended the night with two hits a piece but the six Colman A’s errors were too much to overcome,

The A’s took on Flandreau last night in Flandreau and will face off with Harrisburg at home on Thursday and Dell Rapids PBR on Sunday.

A’s split in baseball action
BY: Billy Stitz

The Colman A’s amateur baseball team split a pair of games this past week, losing 4-1 on Wednesday to Garretson before defeating Humboldt-Hartford on Sunday 4-3.

Garretson 4 – Colman 1

Garretson got on the board early on Wednesday scoring two runs (one unearned) off A’s starting pitcher Derek Entringer in the second inning to take the early lead.

Entringer settled down from there, pitching two shutout innings before being replaced.

But Garretson would strike for two more runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to three hits and a walk.

The A’s got their lone run in the bottom half of the sixth. Brandon Womack led off with a single and was moved over to second on a sacrifice by Deon Entringer before scoring on an error by Garretson’s shortstop.

Neither team would add any more runs in the seventh and final inning, bringing the game to its final of 4-1.

No Colman hitter had more than one hit on the night, tallying just four as a team on Wednesday.

A’s 4 – Humboldt-Hartford 3

After squandering a three run lead in the top half of the eighth-inning, leadoff man Deon Entringer hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to lead the A’s to the victory on Sunday evening, his first homerun since the change to wood bats.

Colman got on the board first with two runs in the fourth inning when Entringer led off with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice by Paul Clark and scored on a RBI double by Billy Stitz, who came around to score on a error by Humboldt-Hartford shortstop Rob Lind.

The A’s got a great start once again by crafty left hander John Roesler who pitched six shutout innings, giving up just five hits and striking out nine Game Cock batters before being pulled before the seventh inning for reliever Brandon Womack.

The Game Cocks were able to tag Womack for the three runs they needed to tie the game in the eighth but Entringer’s home run in the bottom of the eighth was all Womack needed to pickup the win, setting down the Game Cock batters in order in the ninth.

Entringer led the A’s offensively, going 2-4 with a single, a home run and two runs scored. Stitz finished the game 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Keenan Soyland was 2-3 with two singles for the A’s on Sunday with an RBI.

The A’s will hit the road for a game tonight at Canova as well as compete in the Parkston tournament this weekend.

Colman opens Corn Belt League season with a win

Jon Wulf Reporting

COLMAN, S.D. -- The Colman A’s started off their 2013 Corn Belt League season on the right foot. After making it to the State Amateur Baseball Tournament for the first time in 75 years last season, the A’s opened up this Corn Belt season with a 4-3 win over Humboldt-Hartford.

With both pitchers dominating through the first few innings, Colman broke through against Gamecock starter Seth Rockafellow with two runs in the fourth inning. An RBI double by Billy Stitz and an error, put the A’s up 2-0. Colman made it 3-0 an inning later, when Keenan Soyland delivered an RBI single. A’s starter John Roseler kept the Humboldt-Hartford offense at bay, but when Roseler left the game, the Gamecock offense came to life. In the eighth, down 3-0, Humboldt-Hartford got on the scoreboard. With relief pitcher Brandon Womack into the game for Colman, Chad Morrison hit an RBI double to score the Gamecocks’ first run of the game. After a sacrifice fly by Bucky Needles scored Austin King, Rob Lind delivered a double to centerfield, scoring Morrison to tie the game at three.

Colman answered in the bottom of the eighth, as Deon Entringer took Bucky Needles’ pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run, giving the A’s a 4-3 lead. Womack closed the door on the Gamecocks in the ninth, to give Colman a win in the league opener. Deon Entringer went 2-for-4 with a home run, a single, an RBI and two runs scored for Colman. A’s get in the win column

The Colman A’s amateur baseball team put up 10 runs for starting pitcher John Roesler who scattered five hits through five innings of work to earn the A’s first victory of the year, 10-2 against Canton Sunday afternoon in Colman.

The A’s who entered Sunday’s game 0-3 on the season, fell behind 2-0 after a two run second inning by Canton but were able to answer right back in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a couple RBI by Keenan Soyland that scored Adam Fritz and Jake Otkin.

Colman took the lead in the third inning thanks to a two out rally that resulted in a two RBI single by Roesler that scored Chris Meyer and Fritz.

The A’s scored two more runs in the fourth inning as well as two in the seventh and two in the eighth to give them the 10-2 lead.

The A’s pitching staff was able to shut down Canton for most of the game, while the offense had its first outburst of scoring on the season.

Roesler gave up five hits and struck out one in five innings of work, while Brandon Womack tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts before Deon Entringer took the hill for a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Roesler also help lead the offense, going 1-2 with two RBI. Fritz finished 0-1 with three walks and three runs scored and Kyle Entringer finished 2-2 with a double and a single with one run scored.
